Dr. Vadim Sherman is my surgeon. There is not enough space on this page for me to tell you how incredible he is. He was a professor and the Director of the Baylor College of Medicine Bariatric program, but is now Director over Methodist Hospital,s Bariatric Center of Excellence. He has extensive training, including training at the Cleveland Clinic. He has advanced degrees in virtual endoscopic surgery. I simply cannot tell you how great I personally believe he is. I am 55, and my recovery was flawless. He spends a lot of time with his patients, and he is very caring and thorough.
I attended 4 seminars and had 2 more scheduled when I was researching surgeons and programs. Even though I continued to research surgeons, I knew the day I went to his seminar he was who I wanted. I suffered from horrible reflux. I just thought it was because I was obese. The thing that jumped out to me was when he said during the seminar that prior to performing WLS he personally performed an endoscopy on all his patients thereby knowing first hand their anatomy and any other issues that might be unforeseen. Sure enough, when he performed mine 1 week prior to surgery, I learned a had a large hernia. He said he would repair it during my bypass, and I have not had a single episode of reflux since. I appreciated the fact that it was not another doctor doing the procedure then reporting to him. He himself knows first hand what to expect when he performs the surgery. That is only one example of how great he is.
On my last pre-op visit before surgery, I asked him about something I had read on ObesityHelp that concerned me. He spent time discussing the issue and drawing pictures. On the morning of surgery as I was being wheeled into OR, he reiterated our conversation. This was days later, but he remembered and obviously cared enough about my concern to once again address that issue. I guess it is pretty obvious I feel so blessed he practices in Houston. My family feels the same way about his skill and expertise.
I understand Dr. Marvin is good as well. His seminar was another I planned to attend but knew Dr. Sherman was the one.

Debra,
I am also a patient of Dr. Vadim Sherman. Actally I saw him today for a fill! He is awesome. He shows that he truly cares about you and addresses your concerns. I have an inside scoop because I used to work side by side with him in the Operating Room. Who knows I might have seen someone's operation on here and didn't even know it! I admire him for his knowledge and skill in the operating room. He doesn't have a "God complex" either (which I know a few surgeons to have). He would be an excellent choice for your coworker. I also just learned Dr. Sherman will be speaking on Saturday for the OH conference!
I have also had the pleasure of working with Dr. Robert Marvin. Although it's been a few years and I haven't worked with him directly with bariatric patients, he is also a good choice. I would do thyroidectomies with him and he is consistent and knows his stuff. I can't speak on his bariatric surgery ability but his Operating Room manner is good.
They're both a hoot to work with. They like music and aren't too uptight and serious all the time. We all know when there's a time for work and a time for play. We always remember the patient comes first.
Either way, your coworker will be in a win-win situation with either surgeon. My choice was obvious but please have her research who she wants to have do her surgery. BTW they're both easy on the eyes!

i have told her about the doctors that i have met personally and really am impressed with the ones that i know but she really needs to feel comfortable with who ever she picks...

Debra, I had Dr. Marvin and am very pleased . From another of his patients she told me he makes the pouch a little larger for less problems. I've been able to eat pretty normal just smaller portions. Had a pain pump postop no liquid diet before and just a short time after. Would definitely recommend him. His office is on Holcombe west of the medical center. See you next week?

ms jean thanks so much for the information i am sending her all the responses..
oh yeah i will be there friday and sat.... my calendar is blocked for those days...

I will be attending the conference. I gotta go support my Dr. Sherman! I also learned that Byron from Nutrition Depot will be there too giving out coupons for his store. (off greenbriar and Holcombe) HE's knowledgeable and has good choices there. i saw we could bring our clothes up there for a swap...really? if so I will have 4 garbage bags full of clothes. thanks and have a great day!
