sleep apnea & obesity
I heard something the other day, and wanted to run it by ya'll. This was told to me by a co-worker from her son who might be a few extra pounds overweight, but no where near obese. The son was told this by one of his doctors.
When a person has untreated sleep apnea, the cells 'feel' like they are starving for oxygen, so they hang on to the fat in the cells. Once the person starts using a C-Pap or Bi-pap machine, the fat in the cells will let go. Has anyone else heard this?? I had never heard this explanation before, but in ways it does make sense. We all know that there is a correlation between the two, and before we had WLS most of us were tested for it, so our WLS is wanting us to have the best possible start on our journey, and get rid of the fat every which way possible.
Personally, I have sleep apnea and have not been using my machine. I have also noticed that my fat % on my scale has gone back up since I have not been using it. So guess who has started using their machine again??? Yes, ME !!! Now that I have heard this, it is now part of my nightly ritual no matter what!!!

NORMA..well..from a purely medical point of view, I would say it makes sense..."apnea" means "without air"..and IF the cells FEEL like they are "starving for oxygen", it's because they ARE..so I guess they would hold on to anything/everything to survive

We Can Do Hard Things
I agree with Gina has to do with Fight or Flight. If the body thinks it's being attacked like deprived of oxygen it will hold on to fluids and any nutrition taken in because it doesn't know when it will get oxygen and food or water again. Ever wonder how the soldiers go to the bathroom while they are fighting at war, they don't for extended periods due to Fight or flight response. Also why we retain fluids for a few days after surgery when the body is sure it will get fluids and nutrients again it releases the fluid it had retained after we are NPO presurgery.
