Hey Babs, My hubby had surgery on his ankle 7 weeks ago and ended up with blood clots in his leg last week. When he had surgery last year he ended up with them in his lungs. He was very lucky they found them. He was also on blood thinners to help prevent them this time and it didn't work. You get blood clots from not moving around enough after surgery. Hubby's doc said from now on, when he has to have surgery again he will need to be on blood thinners for a minimum of 6 months to help prevent the clots. This is as much as I know, hope it helps. I am so sorry for there loss. This really makes me sad.

This is so sad.  I am praying for her family and friends.

How long after surgery do you need to watch for blood clots?  I am plainning for surgery and want to tell my Dh how long to stay on my case for.

Yes, you can definitely get them from anything. I got mine in 1980 from taking birth control pills.

They are dangerous if not caught in time. Sometimes the symptoms are quite obvious, but mine weren't. I thought I had just pulled a muscle in my back. I had mine for days before I finally figured it out. I was lucky it didn't break lose and go to my heart or brain.

Thank you for posting this.  It is so sad...

On Sunday she was saying she thought it was strange that she had gas pains 3 weeks post op. She said they had gone away but then returned a week ago. I bet the pain she was feeling wasn't gas at all.
I will be at the viewing tomorrow along with some other women from our support group.

This is a very important point ... you are supposed to gradually get better. If you find yourself going *backwards* even if what is happening is mild or someone else had it worse -- get it checked out!!

The sad thing is she did go the next day to get checked out and they gave her iv's and sent her home. She died the next day on the way back to the ER. You have a great point and hopefully everyone understands it. Even if it's nothing (like she thought it was just gas), it never hurts to get it checked out.

And make those damn ER docs pay attention! Because they often won't, unfortunately and they often know nothing about bariatrics.

(This is something that scares me the most. I live 7 blocks from a hospital but they have no bariatric department so if I need ER help in the early days, I'm going to travel farther.)
