Ruby - How do we feel about this?

Ruby is a beautiful young woman from Savannah GA.   She has been 700 pounds at her highest weight, and  approaches 500 pounds right now.   The Style cable television channel is doing a series, or maybe a mini-series, I don't know, about this young lady.

She's very very pretty, and it seems like she has a wonderful, fun personality.   She's going to try to lose her weight, as far as I can gather, with diet and exercise.  I think she's very committed to this, but it looks like her group of friends are still offering her cheesecake and brownies.

I'm reserving judgment on this.   It makes me feel kinda bad to discuss this, since the small amount of her that I've seen in previews makes me like her so much, it seems like I'm being disloyal.   But she's on a national television show, and I think opinions are going to be flying.   So ....   It looks *to me* that she's already suffering the comorbidities of super morbid obesity at her young age, and the possibility of her losing the majority of her extra weight without surgical help is pretty slim.

I wish her all the best with her struggle - just like I do everybody!    But, for the supermorbidly obese, the difference between diet-and-exercise and WLS  is that surgery works.

I'll probably watch the show when it comes on.   Unless it's all preachily anti-WLS, and paints people who have WLS as taking the easy way out.   Then I'll avoid it.

I am praying to god it works for her, but my concern is just like with Biggest Looser once the camera and lights are off she will regain and be worse off .

Yes, that's another aspect.   I am not optimistic about her being able to lose it in the first place.

Aloha Dennie- I heard the ad on the radio today but haven't seen the trailers or show.
It could be that with enough extra support ( on the producer's dime and sponsor gifts) that she gets, she could be successful- that plus the constant spotlight of the media keeping her on track. Think of how successful you could be with a dedicated personal trainer, nutritionist, chef, massage therapist, brand new home gym, whatever - all being paid for and documented by someone else? Plus the spokesperson contracts afterwards. If she has lost 200 lbs, something is working. If she fails, there's  WLS - but I'd want to see how it goes if she's lost that much now. XOLori

You know, that's a point, especially for people who are not super morbidly obese.   I'm SMO myself, and I know, that if I were not just totally merciless with myself, I'd weigh 600- 800 pounds.   I can just see it.

And I think I probably would lose quite a bit of weight if I had a personal trainer and I didn't have any other responsibilities but to exercise, and I didn't have to control my calories and carbs because a personal chef was doing it for me.    And making it palateable.   But I doubt that I'd be able to lose all of the massive amount of weight i have to lose, and I'd have a very hard time maintaining the weight I did lose.  It kind of is my own personal history.   I was a SMO when I was a computer lady.   I was sedentary and it finally hit me - Hey, I'm huge!   So I quit that job and started exercising a lot.   I went to nursing school, and worked as a nurse.   The average nurse walks 7 miles a day - and that was based on an 8 hour shift.   I worked 12 hour shifts, and I walked and played golf on my days off.   I lost about 160 pounds.    But then I got pneumonia and my blood sugar and blood pressure shot up and the next thing I knew I was on all kinds of medications and gaining weight faster than I'd ever thought about losing it.

Also, look at Oprah.   She HAS those things you mention, and she still struggles.   She'd lost a lot of weight - I think she was pretty much at her goal.   She had some kind of thyroid problem and gained so much weight.   She's got the hormone thing under control again, but hasn't been able to lose back down to where she had been.

Every diet works for everybody.   For a while.   Well, I'm going to watch the show.   I know I tend to be cynical, and I try to curb that.

I watched the show tonight -- she seems like a spectacular person. Although we may have our doubts about the longevity of her weight loss (based on our own experience), I think she will shed light on the difficulties of living life MO and maybe enlighten some people. She is a very appealing, attractive, sympathetic figure which should help draw in more people to watch.

Maybe she will keep it off, maybe she won't -- but she is brave to put herself out the way she is, and I will definitely be cheering her on from the side-lines! :)

ACK - it started tonight??    I thought it started on the 18th!   Oh well, Style network shows each of their shows about 87 times during any given week.   I'll catch it.

She really does seem spectacular, doesn't she?   You make some very good points.   I think she probably will enlighten people and I wish her all the best.

I havent seen it, and im not sure I have the time to watch it

But, its showing a beautiful and active SMO woman, I think thats great. Its a whole lot better than that crappy brookhaven show.

If it works or if it doesnt, thats not something we can say anything about. I hope she is working to become healthier
