Rana, So glad you posted...you are a great example of someone further out who has kept the weight off.  Congratulations!

Has it been that tough to make the right choices and please explain what a PCOS is?

I wish we could hear from more people who are years out, including those that have not done so well.  It seems the tool is very effective short term...but years ahead will the tool still be effective enough to continue to curb those out of control cravings?  Sounds like that early on there are almost no cravings and temptations are almost non-existent.

PCOS = Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.  It affects a woman's hormone levels, periods, and ovulation.  It can also make it very difficult for her to lose weight.  Even with WLS, the weight doesn't come off as easily as it does for non-PCOS women.

I remember also when I was new and I wished that more of the "old timers" would post.  There weren't that many of them back then.  And that's why I try and pop in here from time to time and post.  But there are many reasons why those who are further out don't post much.  Those who have gained weight often feel ashamed or like a failure so they don't come back around.  There are a few who have had the courage to come back and get support.  Then there are those who just can't take another question about stalls or what to eat when you are on full liquids.  But mostly, the old-timers have transitioned into a new sense of normal and have moved on with life.  There comes a point where WLS takes a back seat to living life-- it's no longer the most prevalent subject on our minds.

I've got to admit, I've got to a point where it's often hard for me to answer questions about VSG.  But it's because I have so much info floating around in my tiny brain and the answers are often much more complex than I have time to write out.  That or I'm just too wordy! (wouldn't have guessed, would ya'!)

The reality is that NO surgery is fool proof the further out you go.  When I had surgery I was 37 years old so I had developed DECADES of bad eating habits.  So far I am almost 3 years out and those BAD habits are there and waiting and that's my reality I live with.  Just like an alcoholic may not have a drink but the temptation is there they live with.  Early on it's "easier" to fight the temptations.

I had a friend that gained all his weight back, but, and that is a big but, he never followed any type of plan. He lost his weight in the honeymoon phase and then he started gaining immediately. He never followed the rules and never adapted to a new lifestyle. To this day he can only eat a small amount at a time but he grazes on unhealthy food all day long. Plus he is an alcoholic. I think if you adapt to a new lifestyle then you are going to be just fine. Don't worry to much. My doc says most vsg's only gain 5-10 pds back.

It's definitely possible, but I think it would mean basically not paying any attention to what or how much you're eating at all. There may be some people who gain weight back and can't pinpoint why because there are sneaky little buggers in some of the things we consume that don't make you feel like you're overeating even though you're taking in way more calories (example: sugary beverages like juice and regular soda), and I would also think that, just like with any diet even without surgery, portion sizes tend to creep up on us unless we go back to measuring at least once in a while to be sure we're staying on track.

I had a chocolate chip cookie last night and can see how it wouldn't be super difficult to gain weight back. That thing went down too good!

I think if you prepare yourself that how you eat now is not a diet but the way you will need to eat the rest of your life (and then do it), you will be just fine.
