Anyone else dreading Halloween???
I am the meanest mom in the whole world, here is what I do.
I do do exactly as you suggested and let them pick out 10 pieces to keep (this keeps me honest, b/c they I know I can't steal any b/c they can count LOL) and then let them pick out a small toy or healthy snack the next time we are shopping.
I also only buy one small bag of candy that we don't like, place it in a bowl on the porch while we trick or treat, it's usually gone by the time we go home, so then I just start giving out what my kids collected. At the end of the night I usually get the teenagers and at around 9 I pick the largest group and give them a large ziplock with whats left to split amongst themselves and then turn off my lights.

My husband does not have the food issues I do, so I usually give him the girls' candy. He works from home and has a basement office that gives me the heebee-jeebies, so it's safe down there. We allow the girls to have one piece after lunch and one piece after dinner until it's gone.
Last year, I stored their bags of candy in the oven, because I couldn't figure where else to put it that was out of their sight (we have a small kitchen!). Well, of course, I turned on the oven a few days later, forgetting the candy was in there. That solved my candy problem last year!

You should look into local dentists- ours buys the Halloween candy from the kids! It is an awesome solution because my kids get waaaaay too much ****! Last year they walk outta there with $15 each, lmao.. And the dentist donated it all to the troops overseas..
I am still loving life with my sleeve! Been maintaining at or below goal for over 4 years!
"People spend a lifetime searching for happiness; looking for peace. They chase idle dreams, addictions, religions, even other people, hoping to fill the emptiness that plagues them. The irony is the only place they ever needed to search was within." - Ramona L. Anderson
I haven't had candy in the house for DECADES--for years I shuttered the windows and turned off lights to make sure no little 'weeners' were expecting any. Couldn't afford it, all the arrivals made my dogs crazy and I don't have kids so didn't find it all that entertaining ;-)
However, LAST YEAR I did my first EVER dress up party and was ROCKIN THE PIRATE WENCH COSTUME! Screw the candy, I was there for FUN AND FROLIC!
Can't tell you how monstrously fun it was to wear something soooo small (to me--a normal XL), a wig, false eyelashes, fake sword and BOOTS.
I can't drop a picture here but I'm pretty sure I have it on my profile.
Cheers, Mateys

I'm just making a rule that I'm NOT going to eat any Halloween candy. There's nothing special about it, it's just a bunch of cheap candy. I'm just not going there. With sweets, as long as I don't start, I'm fine. Once I have one piece, the deal's off.
My daughter doesn't have a problem with food. I'll let her keep all of her candy and she'll eat a few pieces a day until she's tired of it and then I'll throw it out.

Not terrible at all ! ! ! If you think you're a terrible mother, here's what I do and have done for ohhhh about 10 years(even before surgery).
We do not trick or treat at all. We do not give out candy (we actually keep our porch light off). When he brings candy home from school parties, he is allowed to pick out a couple of handfuls of his favorites, they are stored in a jar on the counter, and the rest goes to our dentist office. Our dentist pays the kids either $0.50 or $0.75 per pound of candy that the kids trade in. In the past when our dentist didn't participate in this program(in a different state, we've moved 2 twice in the last 4 years), we make care packages for troops overseas. Those guys/gals love candy ! ! ! So, we toss the candy in ziploc baggies, and toss it into care packages for them.
When my son was younger, we would do the "trunk or treat" at our local church, and attend the "fall" festival at his school. But, now that he's in middle school, this isn't as big of an issue. This year, he'll attend the Halloween dance instead of hounding me about attending some Halloween party.
