How do you cook without being bad!

I am the primary cook in my family and I taste stuff as I cook it typically.  I am on my pre-liquid diet and I have done pretty well, although I did have a couple of slips.  I have now realized one of my big slippery slopes is when I cook for my family, How in the world do I handle cooking without wanting to taste everything??? How do you all do it?

Luckily I don't do the cooking. I had to once right after surgery and did not taste the food and it was not very good
Taste it, then spit it out (just don't swallow)

 Honestly, if you know that cooking food for your family is one of your weak points, you gotta stop doing it. Willpower only works for a short period of time - you have to romove yourself from that stimulus. Rotate family chores around so someone else is cooking ... Kids need to learn how to cook anyway, or give it to the hubby!  But please don't torture yourself by making tantalizing food that tempt you!!

After surgery you may be really turned off by food/nauseated and won't want to taste it or even smell the stuff. You definitely should get out of cooking for a couple weeks while you recover.  A couple tastes on your pre op diet I don't think is a huge deal but after for the sake of your tummy you should avoid it.  I'm a cook too and good cooks have to taste their food... but after surgery yeah make someone else do it, or cook up a whole bunch of stuff in the next couple days for your family and freeze it so you won't have to do it for a while. (or maybe friends/neighbors can bring over a meal or three...)

I do a TON of cookingand baking post op, probably more than even before surgery.

Its weird, but I kind of think it quells my food addiction. Cooking things makes me not have to eat them. So a few things I have noticed:

I cook healthier, protein based dishes. Which are good for everyone. And I taste some while cooking as needed and do not feel guilty. I have gotten very creative with meats, trying many styles of cooking like Greek and Moroccan and Indian, all of which flavor bland meat to taste satisfying. I have even been cooking game meats to keep it interesting like deer, rabbit, and quail.

Its really weird but by the time the food is on the table I kind of dont want any more of it because I already had some..

 I find just a few bites satisfies me even if it isnt the healthiest thing..

Its kind of a hard concept to graps pre-op because you dont have the restriction, and grazing is not a healthy thing..but the reason i got my sleeve was to be able to eat small amounts of regular healthy food, not the whole freaking casserole dish. And thats what I do. And dont feel guilty. Thats what works for me.

You know that this may be a problem for you personally, so maybe you just have to eat your meal before you start cooking, because then you cant eat for another 3 hours. That might help you stay on track.

You learn.  I learned i can either do multiple tastings when I'm cooking or i can sit down and eat with the others.  So i only taste a tiny bit at the end but i don;t do it all the way through and it's been fine.  Your tiny little sleeve will dictate changes everywhere.

I've been using my crock pot more often and making things that have left overs. I've also taken requests from the fam since I have little interest in the meals. Sometimes the smell of the food cooking nauseates me.

I was talking to my RD about this......

Most the food pics I show..... I don't eat till the next day.....or next meal.

I eat while I'm preparing/tasting..... By the time I'm done with the dish and it is photographed.... I've eatin enough and I'm fine. I don't mind this at all.... makes me eat slow cause I'm doing stuff and I'm getting the flavors down.

My RD says a lot of people don't count the calories/intake of the tasting while preparing..... not good!

So my point is... account for your tasting calories.

It is harder when you have to cook for others on a regular basis.... but whatta ya gonna do......

Maybe pre-make some meals ahead of time so your tasting is done with.....

 I was a tester too!  The thing is, the more you test while you're cooking, the less room there is to actually eat.  So, if I want to sit down and eat dinner with my family, I can't test and sample when cooking.  Works out for me!
