And congrats on Onederland! Outstanding :)
I've gone "back to basics" myself this past week.
My doctor's goal for me was 180. Nine months post-surgery, I had lost 130 lbs and hit that. Instead of enjoying it for a while, I immediately changed my goal to 170 and expected to keep losing.
Didn't happen.
For the first time since surgery, my weight's been hovering at 179-181 for over a month.
I'm actually pretty happy here, but want a little "weight cushion" so hope to lose a bit more, 10-15, I think.
So I've gone back to basics, cut out the extra snacking, upped the protein, and increased fluids.
This morning I was 178, so hopefully I'm starting a (slow) downward trend again!
As you and Frisco said, if you do the right stuff, it can't help but work :)
Good Morning..
Your post was somewhat of a eye opener for me. My surgeyr date is March 8th and I have been somewhat obsessed with trying to read and gain so much information that now I feel as I may be "over thinking" as well. So I probably need to just relax and follow the post-op guidelines my doctor has given me. The only thing is I feel what would help me is a actual timeline. I do real well with these. Like one for weeks 1-2 and then another for weeks 3 and 4. after that I think I can figure it out. Do you know of one or where I can get that?
Thanks again.
My doc doesn't give time lines. I think Dr. Cirangle tells his patients that he likes to see 50% of excess weight lost (EWL) at 3 months, 80% at 6 months and goal in a year.
I was at 47% at 3 months, and probably 68% at 6 months. This is a combination of my food and exercise choices, and how my own body works. I feel very successful, even though I didn't make these targets. I know I will be successful because it's been six months and my eating isn't running off the rails, *and* I know can keep eating like this for quite a while. Targets are useful because they tell you what's possible, and give you realistic numbers to shoot for when many docs are satisfied at 65% EWL.
Right now, I have 38 more pounds to my ultimate goal. I really have no doubt I'll make it. I have averaged 1.8 pounds per week over the past 3 months. So I think I can hit goal at a year if I'm vigilant and step up the exercise.
A good plan followed imperfectly will work if you stick with it. My goal is 700 cal/day, and I usually end up in the 700s except for bad choice days. And my bad choice days aren't that bad, usually higher fat foods, not crappy useless junk, and not more than 900 cals. I am not hungry on this food plan (and I can definitely get hungry), and I do not feel deprived.
I would say this: do not force more calories early out, no matter what your NUT tells you. Sometimes I've heard them encourage calories and carbs that are more for normies. I hear some of them are saying as much as 1200 cal a day, to people only a few months out. I could definitely eat 1200 cal a day (now, not at 2 months) if I set my mind to it and ate 6 times a day or ate crappy useless junk, but why? I'm well satisfied at less than that, and I meet all my protein goals every single day. Stay low for as long as you can, because it won't be forever and it's easiest early out.
I think it's very helpful to the people who are about to embark on this journey to hear from the people who have been doing it and those that have "done" it (maintaining).
Even from those that have not had the great success they had hoped for,
Learning from each other in invaluable.

Thanks, Donna! I agree, and I really enjoyed your recent post about making the most of things early out.
I want you to know that I think you've been a great success. Success is much more about persistence than time-to-goal, you know? I completely know that it's critical to not waste the time early out when it is easier to lose. But I also know that I will have a better outcome five years out if I'm still following a food plan imperfectly, than if I reach goal quickly then let everything go to hell. Cause that's right where it goes for me, straight to hell if I let my guard down.
1 to 4 weeks out: 200-400 cal
5 to 6 weeks out: 400-600 cal
3 to 6 months out: 600-600 cal
6 to 12 months out: 800-1000 cal
1 year post op: 1000-1200 cal
I think this seems to be a good guideline providing I am getting all my protein & fluids in.
I am a avid water drinker (easily 64 + a day) and have always loved protein shakes. I am interested in my post-op taste buds as I favor vanilla shakes. I am also a water gulper and am going to have to learn to sip, which I'm sure I will very quickly, haha.
So the tips about adding protein power to various yogurts and adding plain Greek yogurt to broths are such great tips for me.
Wow!

Thanks again.
