Frisco-My Biggest Secret to Goal and Beyond
Seems I don't have the time and patients to read and comment on many posts these days and the ones I do read can be so varied.
Here is a re-post that covers some things I have learned that I feel are specific to my WL and setting myself up for long term Weight Control and getting the most from my sleeve.
This information becomes very important at this time, because many people are getting larger sleeves performed by new surgeons doing this non standardized procedure. As a VSG surgeon gains more experience and strives for results greater than the 60% EWL average, their sleeve sizes will probably become smaller.
My surgeons statistics based on several size sleeves and surgical techniques over the last 11 years shows that although all sizes showed WL.... the larger sleeves had a harder time reaching goal and had a higher percentage of long term regain.
People need to remember or know that WL is only the first part to this process. Keeping the Weight off long term is the real "Goal"
It's all a waste of time effort and money.....if you can't keep it off......(that's what I tell myself)
Don't lose sight of the real goal........maintaining your WL for 3-5 years......
Hope this helps...

OK...... Lotta new people here.....That haven't heard my sermon....
- Lotta new surgeons with some very funky surgeries going on. (not a topic for now)
- Lotta questionable eating plans going on. (not a topic for now)
I used to say...... "Follow your surgeons plan"
Don't say that anymore....not for a long time. Some people don't even have a plan and some people have plans/nutritionists that follow textbook eating for normies.
My number one biggest tip for ANY VSG Patient regardless of what sort of sleeve you got. I say that because the VSG is NOT STANDARDIZED and most sleeves are not created equal.
For any Sleever:
NEVER eat till your FULL..... Eating till full is how we got fat.
Eat fixed/measured amounts of food that is UNDER your sleeves capacity. Learn to eat till satisfied, not full. You will be surprised on how little food it takes to be satisfied.
Eat meals in the 3oz. range. A deck of cards is about 3oz. of food. Get used to visualizing your portions. Your not always going to have measuring devices with you.
This is especially important for the folks with larger sleeves. The larger the sleeve the more stretchy tissue is retained.
The only way to stretch your sleeve is constant over eating......The only way to preserve your restriction is to not put internal pressure on your sleeve......the sleeve is a very high pressure system...... you don't have that big stretchy fundus anymore.
Not only can your stretch your sleeve laterally.....It can elongate also.....
I have the same restriction now at 2 years than at about 4-5 months out. Dense protein..... about 2oz. is very satisfying.
Sure...I've over eatin before.....most times by accident or a new food. I've had the foamies about 5 times......4 of those were in the first year. I have never puked.
And guess what....if your constantly trying to eat till your full and eating varied amounts of food.....your probably not keeping an accurate count on your calories/intake.
So that's my big secret.........
Only a few of you are going to grasp this concept and practice it....that's just the way it goes......
Hope this helps.....

Frisco,
Thanks for the reminder! As I get close to the 6 month mark I see how easy it is to return to old habits and eat more. I refuse to end up back to where I was or for this to be a total waste of time, money and effort! So, I"m getting back up on the horse and starting w/the basics!
Thanks again!

Thanks for the confirmation Frisco! I get in trouble every time I go back to my Nut...she constantly says that I don't eat enough. I argue that I'm always satisfied and have never puked or had the foamies. I feel better than I have in 20 years. I figure that as long as my labs are good, weight is continuing to come off, and I'm off my diabetes meds, I must be doing something right! I love your posts and those of the other knowledgable vets. Congrats on your success!
Thanks Frisco, I always look forward to your posts. I never take offense to anything; I actually see it as " tough love" so to speak.
I also believe the real goal & success is keeping the weight off. When the statistics are so high for re-gain, it's kinda scary. Thanks for your reminders because sometimes we need to see it again to stay focused.

I am so glad you are hear and posting this stuff. I agree with you 100% on this and on just about every point you make. We must have had the same teacher. You are still an inspiration to me in so many ways. By the way, where are more of your food porn pix? I miss those. Although my husband is probably happy there haven't been many as it saves him a trip to the supermarket at 10:00 PM to hunt down the ingredients. :)
Keep the food porn coming, we insist. Where is is that recipe book anyways? How long must we clamor for it? It's just like you to make us beg for it. Come on Frisco, make it happen, the crowds are growing restless over here.

Thanks Frisco! As I near my goal weight I am slightly afraid of slipping back into old habits which made me fat. Your posts are always so helpful and we often need reminders to keep us focused and remember why we had surgery in the first place. You are an inspiration and give great advice. Much appraciated!
