So, I've been running for several months now - doing about 6-7 miles on my "long" day.  Today, for the first time in probably 25 years, I ran in a 5k race.  The whole time before the race I was looking around, thinking how "fast" aka "skinny" everybody else looked.  I was just praying that I wouldn't be dead last.  I promise, I probably would have run right over one of the 10 year old kids there just to avoid the humiliation of being last!  Assuming I could catch them, that is.   And I'm a mom!

We took off, and I ran the first mile way too fast. At the mile marker, they yelled out the time, and I was thinking "holy cow, I've never run a mile that quickly before!"   Then the second mile way too fast. ("Holy cow, I ran this one at the same pace as the first one!!") Then I was chugging away on the 3rd at a considerably slower rate (but NOT walking).  There was a young teenage boy about 50 yards in front of me who was walking.  Every time I got up to his shoulder, he would stop walking and sprint about 100 yards then start walking again.  Again I would continue at the same pace, catch up to him, and off he'd go sprinting again!  It was pretty funny.  I guess he didn't want the old lady to catch up to him!

Anyhow, I finished at a little under 11 minute per mile pace (33:20 for the 5k).  Respectably in the middle of the pack.  Got a neon yellow t-shirt, a frisbee, and  a big kiss (that came from the husband).  It was a total blast, and I can't wait to do it again next week...in under 33:00!

Thank you!  I will say my doctor said that the running is great at keeping the metabolism rev'ed up.  I just followed a c25k program, and it went quite easily.

That is an awesome story!  And you look wonderful.  I keep thinking that when I am released to full exercise that I will start the C25K route.

Your smile says it all!

That is so sweet of you!  I did the c25k as soon as I was released to exercise, finished it January 1st, then found a "beginner's marathon" schedule (35 week program) which I've been following.  I'm lucky enough to have a good friend who is an ultra marathon runner (50 mile races) and who has been kind enough to offer advice throughout the process.  It is really helpful having somebody who knows what they're talking about to help you pick the right shoes, coach on form, etc..

That's great for 5K, I still haven't measured the distance that I walk to work and from work to my car yet. It takes me a good 35 mins each way now where one way which was a bit more hill was taking me 45 but that was in the freezing cold of the winter as well when I had ice grips on my feet to prevent me from sliding. Most days I just want to pick my feet up and run to do it faster, some day I will but I want to make sure I am running correctly. Lots of my walk is all uphill so I still have rapid heart beat by the time I get to flat walking for a few mins. I really want to practice running on a treadmill in the house but I haven't picked up a treadmill yet and not sure if I want to run with everyone watching at first.

I totally get you about not wanting everyone watching.  In the beginning I went only after dark with my husband or teenage son.  Gradually as I lost weight I felt less self-conscious and was comfortable in daylight.  One thing that I did find helpful was running on a suspended track at my gym.  The surface is very forgiving, much more so than a concrete sidewalk.  I run on it at least twice a week, and I think that is part of the reason why I've managed to avoid any injuries thus far.

Yes, I have heard running on a treadmill is different then running on concrete. I think I would rather do it at home and duct tape the goods down as well, not sure how I am going to manage that part yet either. There are running programs here but we (coworker and I) missed the class registration. My coworker started running last year and I told them to get ready to teach me this year but they haven't started up again and not ready to teach lol. I am still quite heavy and figure it is too soon yet because it is going to be hard on my knees. My brother in law is going to sell his treadmill I will wait to see how much they want for it, then my other sister said they have one down in their basement but she can't get to it but it worked many moons ago but yet she went out and brought a new one not long ago so hoping that one will be good enough. I have a manual one but I don't think that will do the trick and might be harder on the lower back.
