How much protein can we have at one time?
Ive read several posts about how much protein we can have at one time on other forums, but havent found any that are specific for VSG. I drink an iced coffee protein drink in the morning and with the protein powder and milk, it has 47gr of protein. Is this too much at one time? Can I add more protein powder or wont I absorb that much at one time?
I recently went through 2 basic pre-op nutrition classes. The dietitian said nothing directly about how many grams of protein to consume per meal, but did say that bypass and sleeve patients need to consume 75-100 grams of protein per day, spaced out over 6 mini-meals, so that would be 12.5 - 16.6 grams per meal.
I can't remember where I heard it, but 20-30 grams max per meal sticks in my mind. More protein than that at one sitting supposedly can't be utilized for fuel so will be stored as fat for future use. And some people think that too much protein at a time is bad for you:

I drink a large Click vanilla latte protein shake (fabulous if you love coffee) for breakfast every day. It has 23 grams protein from the protein powder and 1 gram from the almond milk I use, so your iced coffee with 47 grams of protein sounds like an awful lot to me!

Thanks for your response Jean. I read the article, but it seems that they only think it is bad for you if you consume more than 30% of your calories from protein. If Im reading that right, and I have 800 calories per day, that means it would be bad for me if I had 240gr of proten...?? Am I reading that right? I get about 80-90gr per day. I guess I just havent found an article that tells me one way or another about how much to have at one time.
One reason I posted this is because ever since I started this new iced protein coffee, my weight seems to be dropping faster than before. Because of this, I really didnt want to change what Im doing, but would if it would be harmful to me in anyway.

Hard to argue against something that's speeded up your weight loss!
Have you asked your surgeon or nutritionist about it?

Your body will absorb all the protein you eat....what matters is how much it uses to build/maintain muscle.
Anything past that is just used for energy. No protein you eat is just wasted.
Now.....for a daily limit.....your MAX protein that can be used for muscle growth/repair is based on how much lean tissue you have.
The calculation is approximately 1.5g protein per day per kg (2.2 lbs) of lean body mass. So if you have let's say 150 lbs lean body mass (everything that isn't fat). Then you would be able to utilize:
150/2.2 = 68.2kg x 1.5g protein = approx 102g protein per day. Now this is the max that your body should use towards muscle growth/repair.
Anything past that would just be used for energy....not wasted.
Very few sleevers get 100+ grams protein per day....so I would not worry about it.

I know exactly what you mean about since you have started drinking the coffee with protein your weight has been dropping faster. I read online that Starbucks can add protein to your coffee, i have spoiled myself with them lately saying it's ok because there is 33g of protein in my drink. well the scales are showing a difference that's for sure!
