Head Hunger?
Hi,
I'm finally starting to feel better day by day now since the surgery. The pain has become tolerable, and I'm able to get my fluids and most of my protein in; I am still on full liquids. My question is this: earlier tonight I was having a really strong craving for eggs, doesn't matter how they are prepared I just want eggs. I also find myself feeling the same way about seafood like salmon and tuna. Of course I haven't gone near these foods since I'm still on liquids, but I'm thinking about them. Does this sound like head hunger, or true hunger? Never really dealt with these feelings before, any advice is much appreciated!

Hi,
Honey, to me this is not head hunger. Head hunger would be when you are not really hungry, and you know you are not hungry, but still wanting to eat any way. That is the old monster raising it's ugly head to get you to over eat. Normally it is not thinking about healthy food. Just my 2 cents worth.God Bless you! Hang in there and enjoy the ride.

Sounds like you're craving more protein than you're getting. So that could be a real craving; meaning your body is telling you, "Give me some extra protein!" Try upping your protein today and see if it helps.
Also could be you're sick of full liquids and want a little something to chew. That's super normal!
If you're not physically hungry, then yes, it's what I call head hunger. Thinking/craving anything for a prolonged period of time qualifies as head hunger for me. It need not be a garbage food, but anything you're not supposed to eat during a specific stage. I wanted steak during my soft food stage. I was getting plenty of protein, but just had a hankering for beef. For me - That was head hunger and it had to be worked through.

I would almost guarantee thats Head Hunger. Your stomach is probably not ready to send you real hunger signals yet.
Oddly enough what helped me during this phase was watching the Food Network and the Cooking Channel! If I couldn't eat food I could at least learn about it and make it for others!
The other key, fo rm, in dealing with Head Hunger is stopping and letting myself go through my feelings when I feel strong cravings. Then I try to redirect those impulses. For me it always strikes when I am alone and lately when I can't exercise. For you its most likely different, but there will be some cause.
I usually warn people, dont accept "boredom eating" for me that was a cop out not wanting to face feeling being lonely. I wrote about my experience with that on my blog.
Good luck, and welcome to the losers bench.
