I am almost 60, Is it still worth it to get the VSG?
I haven't had my surgery yet, but OMG YES YES YES YES a thousand times YES!!! I will be sleeved June 28, one month shy of turning 65 and I had the same questions you are having until I did some serious thinking. I have two major comorbidities: Type II Diabetes and Stage III Chronic Kidney Disease plus advanced stage arthritis in my back. Yours are different, but I'm here to tell you that many excellent scientific studies show that most comorbidities can be stabilized, improved, and even seemingly "CURED" with bariatric surgery. No, the surgery isn't going to cure the arthritis, but losing weight should help with the constant pain. That's how I came to the conclusion that this is the way I needed to go to at least TRY to live a longer, more healthful life.
Maybe I am reading too much into what you said about "if it is really worth it to do this, since I am almost age 60"......almost sounds like you don't feel you're valuable or worth the journey to a happier, healthier life. I apologize if I misunderstood, but those words reminded me of how I felt when I was told 2.5 years ago that a lot of Stage III CKD patients have only 5-7 years before dialysis/renal failure/transplant/or death. It was so demoralizing that I wouldn't replace a worn bra because I didn't know if I would live long enough to get use out of it. I laugh about it now, but at the time, I cried.
YOU ARE WORTH IT. YOU ARE WORTH the process of getting approved, of going through the surgery and the tough work ahead. Age is irrelevant. Heck, I think I'm the oldest person posting here, and in 5 days, this 64 years and 11 months "recycled teenager" will get her sleeve.
I hope this helps you.............feel free to PM if you need someone to talk to about this some more.
Good Luck
Ree
A resounding YES from me too.
I just turned 62 last week - had my surgery 5 months ago. I decided to go for it because I knew I would not lose and maintain a healthy weight on my own. Been there and tried to do that for the last 40 years -- wasn't going to happen.
I decided that I didn't want to live the last few decades of my life in pain because of carrying so much weight. Since surgery my arthritis pain has been drastically reduced -- able to control it with Tylenol instead of Voltaren twice a day.
