I guess I'm not having the surgery for now...

I went to my dietitian and psychology appointments yesterday and they told they don't think I'm ready for surgery right now with all I have going on in my life with moving out (which I did on Sunday and had to do to get away from my parents bad eating habits) and searching for a second job/full time job and going to school.  I haven't found the time to get exercise in and they don't think I'm following the plan as well as I could, so they asked if I would mind following a medically managed diet for awhile until my life settles down.  I'm hoping to still have the surgery down the road, and I'm a little disappointed I won't be having it this year, but I guess things happen for a reason.  Since I've started my journey toward surgery in April, I have lost 22lbs on my own though, so that is something.

Good luck in your journey, Alyssa. Becoming more healthy is not a race, it is a process. You are still on the path.

Hi Alyssa,

Sounds like you do have a lot going on right now. Do you agree it would be better to wait? Since you say they asked you if you would mind following a medically managed diet for awhile until your life settles down, it sounds like you have a chance to either agree or disagree.

It may be good to ask what specific steps they feel need to be completed before they would be comfortable giving you a recommendation for surgery. Such as exercising x times per week for x number of weeks...or something like that to give you something specific to shoot for. Did you discuss how long they would like you to follow the managed diet? 2 months? 3 months? 6 months? Those things would help give you some goals to shoot for, I think.

No matter what happens, congrats on those 22 lbs so far! Good job!

Lindsey

Looks like you are doing all the right things to get you happier and healthier.... You will get to your goals.... But I think they are concerned if too many balls in the air... Something will get dropped... We all can juggle just soooo much!

You are making huge changes in your life and it sounds like they are positive ones.  Just keep going girl. The stronger you get physically and emotionally, the better your sleeve experience will go.  Congratulations on continuing this journey.

You are a warrior!!!

You go, girl!

Personally, if I wanted this surgery and SOON, I probably wouldn't share any of the things I'm juggling with them. I even lied about my friends/family support to the psych during the eval. I shouldn't have to risk not being approved because I have crappy people in my life that are unsupportive or because I don't have many friends to help me along the way. I'm doing this for ME and i can do it on my own just fine!

Perhaps if you agree with them then go ahead with their plan but you have the right to think about it and disagree if you so choose.

As much as I want this surgery, I am not about to risk failure because I didn't reveal everything to the people who are supposed to help me.

Are you going through insurance or self-pay? If through insurance you probably don't have any real choice but to go the diet route for now and look cheerful about it. If you're self-pay you have other options.

It's tough when they make you wait when you are so primed to do this. I had to wait 6 mos. due to insurance reqs. And boy was I ticked! I had a surgery date and thought I was ready...but I was able to use that time to get fitter with excercise and learn a lot more re: just what I will be facing and dealing with. Able to prepare and go into it with some peace of mind.and use this forum for advice and support!
Good luck and keep up the good work. It will happen.

Alyssa, I dont feel I'm risking failure at all whether I share that I have unsupportive family or friends or not. My success depends on ME and ME alone and that is why I wouldn't risk some person who doesn't know me and is spending 45 minutes to check off a box to satisfy insurance requirements with info that makes no difference to my success.

And I'm doing FABULOUS...on my own.
