Protein Ice

 Hi all

Im scheduled for VSG in a month.  I CAN'T stomach any type of protein shake.  I throw it back up again immediately.  I have tried numerous kinds and non of them work for me at all.  I just can't drink anything milky (including milk).

So after throwing up again last night trying my best to down one, I sat on the couch and cried wondering how I was going to get through pre and post op.

So this morning, I put on my big girl panties, told myself to harden up and find something else that will work for me!

After driving round a number of supplement places (please note that I'm in New Zealand and we don't have the same variety most of you do in the US), I found a drink called Protein Ice.  It's 160 calories, 0 carb and 42grams of protein in one 550ml bottle.

I have read about 400 odd pages of this forum (VERY useful and some inspiring stories and pics!!) and though I would ask for your opinions as I have read a couple that refer to some protein drinks as collagen proteinsaying it's not good.

I just don't have any other options at this point and don't want to not take this opportunity because I can't drink shakes.

Your thoughts are most appreciated.

Suzy

My absolute favorite protein is Unjury chicken soup! It doesn't taste gross like protein shakes at all! It tastes like a warm cup of chicken broth (but less salty). I really love it. I am pre-op and I drink this now WILLINGLY. I believe you can only order it on their website so but they were really quick with shipping when I ordered. I will definately be ordering chicken soup through them for after surgery! I tell everyone about it, I truly love the taste that much.

Good luck!

I don't know anything about that particular drink, but generally the collagen protein is found in tiny drinks (think the size of shots of a beverage) and it's usually advertised as being some kind of miracle protein. The nutritional info you supplied makes me think what you've found might work.

What kind of protein is in the drink? Most of the good ones will have protein whey isolate in them.

There are drink mixes from Bariwise that you mix in water...kind of like crystal lite.  They're ok.  I got them from dietdirect.com I believe.  Those might be worth a try.  Or maybe get some unflavored protein to mix in things like pudding or soup broth.

Collergen protein is not a variety that we can absorb...  stick to whey  or soy.  There are products that have zero milk like issues going on with them.  Try Isopure (drinks like kool aid) or Special K has a individual protein mix pack (like Crystal light) that you can add to water.  That stuff can be a *****uncky though if you hand mix it, never tried using a blender.

Are you lactose intolerant? If that's the case, you'll need to look for protein that isn't milk based. Or you can try some of the less milky ones like the Syntrax Nectar proteins. The Syntrax Nectars mix easily with water and have many fruity flavors. You might try Isopure and see if that one works for you, too. It's used during the clear liquid diet portion post surgery.
There are also some soy protein based drinks out there, but I have no experience with those. I know others on OH have used them and have been very happy with them.

And yes, stay away from the collagen protein drinks. We don't absorb collagen protein.

Good luck!

If you can't stomach milk did you try egg or vegan protein mixed with water?  You could also mix it with soy milk or almond milk but I'm not sure if that's available where in New Zealand.   Likely soy milk is cause I even saw that in Mexico.  But EGG OR VEGAN protein might go down better since neither are dairy.

Try making it hot.  I was in the same boat as you.  I couldn't drink any kind of protein, right away it would come back up.  After 7 months I decided to try the choc and make it like hot choc.  I used the body fortress from walmart (choc).  Take a coffee cup and fill it up and put it in the microwave until it is very hot.  Then in another cup, put about 1 oz of water in it and put a scoop of the protein powder in it.  Mix it up until it's dissolved and then add the ho****er to it.  I also add a little SF FF caramel syrup into it.  It taste like a candy bar (without the caramel it taste like hot choc).  It goes down very good and I really like it.  I haven't tried other flavors hot yet but, I am thinking about it.
* remember you can't mix protein powder into hot liquids.  It will not mix up and will just clump!

Not sure but I've read, and was told by my dietitian, that liquids warmer than 135 degrees F. will denature the proteins, making them less bio-available.  Might be worth checkin' out. :)
