My mom thinks she may be too old for the sleeve... Any sleevers get there sleeves at 65 or older?

I am not -- but a woman in my support group's mother was 65 when she got the sleeve, and says her mom did great!

I also think that there are a couple of over 65- or close - sleevers on the board.

Best of luck to her!

I'm 61 - sleeved 10/2. Having my ups and downs but nothing too serious. I want to enjoy what time I have left and enjoy my grandchildren, so I decided to take the chance - even though I had to pay for it myself. There are others on board who are older - my surgeon says he has done people in their 70's and they have done well. Tell her good luck!

Got mine at 71 1/2 years old, currently 4 years post-op!

If it feels good, do it!  And if it smells good, eat it!

Hi,

I had my surgery June 28th this year -- exactly one month shy of my 65th birthday.  It was a walk in the park except for the umbilical hernia repair I had done at the same time -- those incisions were a little pinchy and twingy, but the sleeve surgery cause no pain -- just a little bit of discomfort -- YMMV.  I did go home with a drain, but that was just an inconvenience and was removed at my one week check-up.  The only thing that my surgeon warned me about is that people who are older tend to lose a little slower than the younger folks.  I'm almost 3.5 months out and have lost 51 pounds and 41 inches.

I went home from the hospital off ALL meds except for the one for GERD which I'd have to take anyway as it is my acid reducer that most sleevers had to take.  No more meds for Type II, no more cholesterol meds, nothing at all.  I have Chronic Kidney Disease and my kidney function numbers have improved a lot; my Type II is in complete remission.

This has been the best thing I've ever done for myself.  Feel free to PM me if you or your Mom have questions............I'm more than happy to try to help.

I would totally agree with Ree. I had my VSG on 11/28/11 at age 62 and I will turn 63 next week. I have lost 112 lbs total, 102 of them since surgery. I've had no problems to speak of. And I have a really bad knee so my exercise regimen is not as good as I'd like it to be, but I follow my food plan 99% of the time. It has changed my life in so many ways, but most importantly I am healthy and energetic. I would defintiely tell your Mom to at least look into it and see if it is right for her.

I was 59 when I had my sleeve and 61 when I had plastics twice. I turned 62 last week. Couldn't feel better or stronger. Before plastics two weeks go, I was hiking 30-40 miles a week up in the Redwoods. Urge mom to do it! My 38 year old son was so supportive.
