WOW, WTF!

I used to use this website as a resource for food and exercise... this article has killed all credibility for me!

As a VGS patient, the first paragraph literally had me say out loud... "are you kidding me?"

So I though I would share to see if I am wrong!

Much love,

Mario

Hi Mario,

I just went to Livestrong and read that article.   I am not sure what you saw that made you say "are you kidding me?"  I didn't see it.  I AM a gastric bypass patient and I am almost 7 yrs post op ( Nov. 22 ).    What I read is totally TRUE.   We DO have to make wise choices ( if we want to lose the weight and keep it off ).    We do  have to watch our portion sizes and chose healthy meats, fruits and veggies.   I didn't see anything that I disagree with in that article.   Maybe I just didn't see whatever it was you saw.    It is early in the AM and I am just drinking my first cup of coffee so I may not be as alert as usual but I have been up and awake for 2 hours.    I use Livestrong daily on my phone to log my food intake.     We make our own success stories or failures since our WLS with our choices in foods that we eat.....things that we do (watching portion control) and moving our bodies with exercising daily.   Without those things I truly doubt that any WLS patient no matter what surgery that the have chosen to have will have long term success.    I personally thought that it was a good article. Please explain to us what you didn't like that they said.   Maybe I'm not with it yet today.   Have a blessed day.

Well... I read it also and I find it interesting that gastric bypass (RnY) equals bariatric surgery in the writer's opinion. What happened to VSG, DS, band etc.? Dietary requirements are different for all, marginally, but different. I have looked at lots of doctors' post op eating plans and have not seen brown rice on any of them! So I would agree with Mario here.

Brown rice is healthier than white but personally I do NOT do rice and rarely do pasta.   Not sure why they didn't mention the other WLS.   Yes...the diets do differ a little but really not that much.    I also have to say....I could NOT do chicken breasts for over a year post op maybe even longer than that.   I truly think they meant that as just "general" information.   All in all I personally like that website.   But then that is me.    Everyone has different opinions.   You just have to take everything you read with a "grain of salt" so to speak.   I personally didn't really go much past the first paragraph...that is what Mario mentioned in his post.   I did get up much earlier than usual.   Maybe I am not with it yet.    LOL   Have a great day.   Sorry they didn't mention the other WLS.   They are ALL good surgeries.

It's actually on a huge amount of plans in this country.  That is why you will see people questioning their nutritionists recommendations when they come to this site.  I also have to say i don't know what Mario is reacting to.

i found it a little inaccurate it terms of saying bariatric surgery is the same as bypass because there are obviously so many other surgeries. bariatric surgery is weight loss surgery. I wrote them a letter saying they should reword the article. Although our diets are all protein based we all have different needs based on the different surgeries we've had. I'm sure they'll correct it. the writer is just a little misinformed.

It seems to me that they were just using BS and GB as an example.  Oh course there are more choices out there.  I agree with both sides. I don't personally eat Rice or Pasta, don't really think its a good idea but some might.  I'm not sure what you were reading that made you say WTF but we all interpret things differently.

Some of livestrong's content is pretty... weak.

I didn't find the article too WTFish, but the first sentence was annoying "Bariatric surgery, also known as gastric bypass surgery,..."

Someone draw this author a Venn diagram!  (Yes, all gastric bypass surgeries are bariatric surgeries, but not all bariatric surgeries are gastric bypass.)

Nutshell:

Lost 140 lbs with VSG. (Hooray!!)

got pregnant  (yeaaaa!)

got cancer (boooo!)

regained 40 lbs.   (grrrr!)

In summary: Alive & Grateful.

I must have missed something I thought that article was pretty good, except for the brown rice part.

I went for 4 consultations before i had this with 4 different surgery groups and hospitals and every one of them included a healthy grain in their daily planning.  On this site what most follow is one doctors plan and it's not the most followed plan by far in the country. That being said people like it and it works well for them but it's not the norm across all surgeries being done in this   country.  Most nutritionists frown on an ultra low carb diet both for the workout of the kidneys and living long term with restrictions like that.  So I'm not trying to start anything here but the Livestrong article mirrors popular though about WLS.  The act that it doesn't include all WLS doesn't seem all that important to me, we all have to make the adjustments.
