Carbs vs Fiber Carbs
I know a lot of you vets say "carbs is carbs". There is a lot of stuff out there that talk about Net Carbs. I don't care about net carbs I care about Fiber Carbs. I have been eating fiber gummies like they are going out of style and they do not seem to be helping a whole lot if you catch my drift. I was researching high fiber foods and after I get my protein in, there isn't much room left for foods high enough in carbs to make a difference. We all know not getting enough fiber leads to problems including colon cancer.
Anyway long story short I found out that Corn Bran has a lot of fiber in a small amount of stuff. In fact 1/4 cub of this stuff breaks down like this:
Calories: 20
Total Carbs: 25g
Dietary Fiber: 22g
Sugars: 0 g
Protein 1g.
That is 88% of your recommended daily intake in 1/4 of stuff. Low cal. My only concern here is the carbs. Is this 3 carbs or 25 carbs? I don't want to rely on Smooth Move and Myralax any longer.
Its 3 net carbs.
Fiber and sugar alcohols are not absorbed and are passed. When calculating total carbs consumed, its only 3

Thats not entirely true - soluble, fermentable fibers in the gut can be broken down by bacteria. The waste from the bacteria is absorbed and provides calories as if you had eaten a normal carb. Not all fibers passed undigested.

25 Carbs.
Heres the deal behind the "net carbs" thing. Its built on the belief that fiber is not broken down and digested. Thats not always true. Fiber comes in two types - soluble and insoluble. Some soluble fiber can be broken down in the gut by bacteria and absorbed - as any non fiber based carb. In the US we are not required by the food labeling law to separately identify the two types of fiber. Companies get away with showing fiber as "net carbs" when its not always true. Kind of like anything less than 5 calories per serving can be labelled as "calorie free".
I always regard net arbs as just accounting games to justify more carbs. If you need additional fiber, look for a zero calorie fiber supplement like miralax or fiber-con.

Hey, I think you learned that trick from me. So give credit where credit is due. :)
Of course it could be that I learned it from you, I am not really all that sure now....
The bottom line is that this is exactly what I do too. I get all of my protein from the main meals and use veggies as snacks. I was only able to do this when I could get enough protein from the main meals and not before about six months out. Early out, I had to do the Miralax to stay regular.
