Depends on your plan.  Usually Nuts want you to avoid the caffeine, because it dehydrates you.  Decaf is ok.  Post op, the acid is an issue for some.  I waited until a month or so out before I even tried, then started with only 1 cup a day until I knew I could tolerate it well.  Coffee loaded with cream and sugar though... find a better way :)

I was told to stop drinking regular coffee altogether when I met my Nutritionist in September (and I did prepping for surgery). My guess is you would be recommended to drink decaf. I would suggest Starbucks Decaf singles. It is by far the best tasting decaf coffee I have had and I don't think it taste like decaf (most decaf to me taste like brown water LOL). I mix mine with 2 splenda and some sugar free creamer. Delish!

Good luck!

I was told to switch to decaf so I wouldn't have to deal with caffeine withdrawal headaches during my immediate post op period when it's so hard to get any fluids in.

Don't worry about the diuretic effect myth - coffee isn't any more of a diuretic than plain water.

After surgery, as with any new food or drink, start with very small servings at first, to see how they sit. Fred was just fine with coffee from day 6, but still gets tied in knots if I send down Crystal Light.

Thanks for all your input.

I was asked about coffee at the beginning too but she didn't see a problem with it at the time. I might have one if it doesn't screw with my test results..

::sigh:: I dreamt about drinking coffee last night! I quit about a week before my pre-op diet so I wouldn't be dealing with withdrawal and the diet!

I never asked my nut when I could go back, but I'll think I'll wait a while. It's hard enough getting all my water in without bringing coffee into the equation.

Sue miss it, though!

Hi Nicole:

Every surgeon has a different eating plan...didn't they give you a diet to follow?   I was allowed Decaf Tea and Decaf Coffee.  Not the fully caffinated drinks even after surgery until around 4 months out.
