Obesity and glorifying it on TV: Honey Boo Boo

I don't dislike her.  Or her fam...I just think its shameful to reward her with fame for being unhealthy, overweight, and so hyper she can barely be understood when she speaks.  Her mother is even worse.  Would you watch a show that parents physically abused their kids?  Sexually?  No, you would be outraged.  Feeding your kid go go juice and mac n cheese exclusively...that's child abuse!!!  As far as disliking rednecks, perhaps you missed where I live?  Nuff said. 

My take is not the same on this. I admit I have not seen an actual whole episode of this show, just snippets.

My concern is that I see this show as exploitive, certainly of the girl, but maybe of the entire family. I'm not sure how "with it" they may actually be.

Also, if I understand correctly, that little girl was initially on beauty pageant shows? Now THOSE are f-ing twisted! Too many ways to count.

I would actually say that the only decent thing is that despite the honeybooboo girl not being classically cute and not very thin, is she loves herself and is being taught that she is great for exactly who she is. I was very similar to her, but learned I was not pretty enough, or thin enough and I was too wiggly and noisy.

My obesity helped fuel my self hatred and loathing, because I didn't fit societies mold. 

And I don't remember much Star Search, but DO remember a part with some sort of model segment, which only drove home what I was supposed to be striving for, and would never attain. 

Beng a redneck has nothing to do with where you live or where you were born - it's a culture and lifestyle you embrace and glorify ... or not!   A choice ...

 

I don'****ch Honey Boo Boo, but you can't avoid the promos during other shows,  I can't help thinking - that little girl capers for the camera, thinking people like to watch her on TV because she's cute.  Wait till she grows up enough to realize it was because people wanted (mostly) to laugh at her and her family, and feel superior.  Very sad.  It's the reason I don'****ch reality programs that exploit others' weaknesses or foibles or "other"-ness, such as this one, or hoarders, or intervention shows, or similar.  It's so blatantly exploitive, it's a little bit soul-killing - for producers, participants, and viewers alike.

Whoa whoa whoa!!!  Who the hell thinks that's cute???  I can barely stomach the promos!  She is barely legible.  I hear her attempt to say something about TLC, or whatever low life channel sponsers her.   if I didn't know the channel she was on...it would be garbled stroke-victim speak.  In fact, I'm not entirely sure it's TLC...could be some other low rent redneck useless channel...But seriously...NOT CUTE.  It's absolutely shameful. 

 

I hear all this talk about anti smoking laws...how if you smoke around your kids, it's child abuse.  How about this?  Sorry, its JUST AS ABUSIVE TO FEED YOUR KID NOTHING BUT MCDONALDS AND MAC N CHEESE.  WTFF? 

So is your issue that she's fat or that they're "rednecks"? So what exactly did you eat and feed your kids to get to the point that you need surgery? You're awfully self righteous aren't you? I'd like to take a look in to your life and see how amazing you are and how you do everything perfect. How would you have felt about it before you had surgery? This whole post actually sounds like self-loathing to me. And after  looking at the pics of you and your family, you're really in no place to be saying people look like and/or are rednecks.

I'm so not a fan of any reality shows.  I just hate the way that these shows are edited to make these people look like bumbling idiots..young and old.  I think the fallout from all these shows for the people on them are more likely than not to be damaging  beyond recovery.  We'll have to see what that little girl is like in 10 years.

OK haters - I feel the need to DEFEND honey boo boo.

Is it right to reward this fat lil girl?  Weren't you that fat lil girl? I know I was.  I know a bunch of us lived a fat lil life.  I know a bunch of us got tease and harassed and treated like crap in general. 

The one thing that I like about that stupid ass show is that a fat little girl is a star and is celebrated and not teased.  A fat little girl is a beauty queen, not a punching bag for all the bullies.

Oh and I love that the family (redneck as they are) are shown loving each other and having fun with each other.  Like you said, in this mean world, do we really need shows that show people being mean.  This show doesn't.  Yes - you can laugh at them if you wish, but if you watch them, you may learn that they are a family that love and support each other.  Much better role models then some others like say the Real House Wives.

Would I prefer they ate better - yes - but they are still on their journey.  Maybe they will learn the importance of good nutrition.  It took me having surgery to get there, so I'm not gonna throw stones at Honey Boo Boo...
