When did you give up coffee and soda?
I gave up diet soda almost a year before my surgery (long story about insurance snafus etc. explains the long wait between starting my program and getting surgery). Our diet classes encouraged us to pick up the habits we would need post-surgery early as well as losing weight generally, so I decided to switch my drinking and limit myself to only water, black coffee, and skim milk (and the occasional glass of champagne on special occasions). Then I gave up my coffee a day before starting the official pre-op two week diet. The soda I didn't miss at all, cutting out coffee turned me into a dazed, headache-blinded monster for about three days.
I think I'll put a warning sign on my cubicle that reads, "dazed, headache-blinded monster...beware" when I first quit!

I tried giving up my diet soda about 3 months before surgery, but I kept going back and having some more. I knew they weren't good for me in the first place, but I LOVED them. I miss them now, but since surgery I feel like I'm eating and drinking all the time, so I don't really have time or room for a soda anyway. It's definitely been easier after surgery to not drink them. I guess I have no choice in the matter right now.

I've never been much for soda, but I love my coffee. I gave it up 1 month before surgery so I wouldn't have to deal with caffeine withdrawal post-op. My program allowed decaf so I switched to a good decaf since I enjoy the taste. I live the Peet's Decaf French Roast and the Starbucks Via Italian Roast Decaf instant (great mixed with Soy milk or vanilla protein powder!)

I gave up sodas at Lent, so back in February. Cold turkey. I'd done it before, so doing it again wasn't a big deal to me. I don't miss them.
On my doctor's plan, we are allowed coffee and tea. Not a coffee drinker so I didn't have to worry about that. I use tea as my substitute for soda.
I gave up caffeine when I started the six month supervised diet... about half way through I gave up soda altogether. It was tough! I'm glad I did it well in advanced though because the pre-op liquid diet was a breeze compared to what it could have been! I think a lot of that had to do with cutting back on carbs at the beginning of the supervised diet too

I weaned myself slowly off coffee 6 months preop, so have had basically no caffeine for a year. I did 'accidentally " drink a caffeinated latte once . Well it was 4 dollars, I could hrdly throw it away ....right? I went to half caf for a month then to decaf. Actually i feel great off the stuff. Carbonation I quit at about the same time. I did have carbonation just a couple times during the last 6 months pre op. Don't really miss either. once you get drinking alot of water, you will really prefer it.

Diet drinks were a huge deal for me - I gave them up with the two week post-op diet and haven't had one since - I'm scared to get back on that train because I was so addicted. I do miss them still but it's worth it.
I started back on coffee - decaf first probably 2-3 weeks post-op. Now I drink regular coffee every day - iced, hot or with protein powder. I also now drink tons of unsweet tea and crystal light.
Well for all those who gave up soda congrats.. I am about 1 yr and 4 mos post-op\. I gave them up about 1 month pre-op and about 8 months post op. I thin ask my doc if I could have one every now and then he said yes b/c they have no proof that it will stretch your sleeve thats all it took for me
