Can I use Bengay two days after surgery?

I have a really sharp, stabbing pain between the back of my neck and my left shoulder.  Massaging doesn't seem to help.  Can I use Bengay?

If you're only two days out, it could be gas pain. Have you tried walking?

Definitely gas pain. Had the same more or less. It fades a couple days. Use the pain meds they gave you if it gets rough.

I have been walking and the only pain meds they gave me was Tylenol, take an antacid every day for 30 days and a self injectable blood thinner for 7 days.

Hi 14eva,

We all have unique journeys to go through. The stabbing pain does sound like gas as everyone has said. I found the Gas-X strips that dissolve on your tongue very helpful in the first few days. However I also used Bengay quite a lot in the time between getting out of the hospital 3 days after surgery and going to my first post-op follow-up appointment 2 weeks later. I probably smelled like a wintergreen lifesaver!

My medical situation is not typical since I have Cerebral Palsy and am a lifelong wheelchair user. I am used to taking muscle relaxers and NSAIDS every day. My surgeon had me go off those meds a few days before surgery and not start again until after my first follow-up appointment. The Bengay and gentle massage helped me deal with stiffness and discomfort until the surgeon was comfortable with me starting my regular meds again. (His only caution was to always take my meds with something that would coat my new stomach.)

Good luck to you, Katy
