For sure I would go for more healthy fats and in particular extra virgin coconut oil. Organic.

These are always so informative! :)

My question is this - I saw my program NUT last night, cleared for solids, but discussed many other things with her. One of them being the protein recommendations for my program. We are told to get 50-60 grams of protein a day. I see many people here aiming for more like 80...what is the rationale of more vs. less protein? Am I going to do OK sticking with my program's recommendations, or should I go rogue and up my protein goals? I'm already afraid that I'm a "slow loser" because I'm a revision from LapBand :(  I apologize if it's been asked & answered before.

Thanks!

Mary

Mary not Keith here, but I am a LapBand to sleeve revision.  I was put on the same protein as you along with 64 oz water.  My therapist gave me a plan from the old NUT, it called for 80-120 grams protein and 100+ oz water.  When I switched to the old plan from the lower protein I started doing much, much better.  Just what worked for one band to sleeve revision.

I lost much better with the sleeve than band.  Keep in mind if you are starting at a lower weight this time you could lose slower due to less to lose.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

Thanks so much for the info! Yah, she was actually happy with my water intake of 50-60 oz, and I was surprised... I think I may experiment with raising both my protein goal and water intake. How do you get that much in a day? What is a typical day of eating look like? Thanks again :)

Protein coffee 20 g

eggs + cheese 20 g

chicken meat  3oz 20 g

Turkey meat 3oz 25 g

Quest protein bar 20 g

This is 105 g

In the early days most came from protein powders.  I drank shake and added unflavored powder to everything.

Count me in as another who appreciates the time you take to answer our questions.

I'm preop and I know how important it is to, as per a previous post of yours, drink 100oz of water per day after surgery. How long did it take you to reach that point, especially since it's so hard to get fluids in at the beginning? And have you gotten to the point where you can chug a bottle of water? I'm going to miss chugging and will have to train myself to sip slowly.

Also I wanted to thank you for recommending Scivation Xtend. I used to have a fair amount of hunger after my workouts but a scoop of the Xtend in 32 oz. of water helps to take those cravings away. I will continue to use it, especially right after surgery.

I still use the Scivation now and I am almost a year and a half out from surgery. So you don't ever really have to stop unless you stop exercising. But definitely use it at least until you return to full foods. It will keep your muscle loss to a minimum.

Now to answer your water question. Yes I can chug water pretty good. Maybe not a whole bottle but after a workout I can get about 6 to 8 oz in my stomach and of course water goes through fairly quickly, so I can usually satisfy my thirst.

I hit 100oz pretty quickly because I really focused on liquids and water in particular. The trick is to always be drinking and you will need to decide if cold water works better for you or cold. For me it was super icy cold water. I think it help to reduce the swelling after surgery. My trick was that I took 4 bottles of water with me every day and my rule was they had to be done before I left work. That gets you most of the way there. Then during the evening (or other parts of the day i.e. before/after) I only had two more to go. The trick is to always be drinking except 30 min before and 30 min after you eat.

At the gym yesterday, I had to stand barefoot on a machine that sends electrical pulses through you to measure lean muscle and body fat. I know these are not 100% accurate, but interesting none the less.

So my question is this, how does the machine view skin (extra flappy skin).  Does it consider it fat?  Just curious.

Ok Keith,

I may be sorry for asking, but I want to know what you think about the "Think Thin" protein bars.  My dad bought me some the other day, I tried them and love the brownie crunch. Currently I use 1 a day as a meal replacement for breakfast or lunch, I have never been a morning person and find my stomach gets quite upset. It seems to have the right protein components, gluten free, and sugar free except it has sugar alcohols. The soy has not bothered me that I noticed in these bars, so my prior sensitivities to other things may be a combo of gluten and artificial sweeteners ( that's a whole other story :)). Just wondered your thoughts, I know protein bars create some controversy on here but really what is the diff between a shake or a bar. I did speak to my dietician already and she thought they were ok, but she also thought to get to my goal of 130 would take me 2 years, which to me is unacceptable, so just thought I would bend your ear....

thanks,

Smiles:),

Lisa
