I Worked Out Today! Did You? - TGIF Valentines Edition
I did not actually workout today. I am taking a couple days off in the hopes that my knees will heal up a bit. I probably should try to get into see a doc but just started a new job and I don't think hearing that surgery on both my knees would make me feel very good for now. Besides that its just uncomfortable not any serious level of pain.
Did you work out today?
Let's Hear It!
Don't ru**** you want to give those incisions plenty of time to heal. Light cardio really means the bike but your best bet is going to be walking. Try to get up to 60 mins per day. Then add some incline. Shoot for 3MPH at a 4% incline (after you are cleared of course) if you are using a treadmill. If you are walking outside then try to find a route that includes some hills.
I'm waiting for clearance from my surgeon for more than walking. As of now, I am walking around stores since it's too cold out. Doesn't sound like much, but I'm happy I'm getting out there.
Once I am cleared, I think I am going to buy a few sessions with a personal trainer to teach me how to work out. When I went to a gym on my own, I ended up on the elliptical and don't know how much that helped. When I was in a crossfit group, I had the instruction of the leader and could feel such a difference in my body with the weights.
So, that's where I'm at.
Its great that you are thinking about it like that. Most of getting into the gym and fit is mindset and if you are thinking about it now there is a much better chance you will do it later. You may be cleared around 6 weeks but I would strongly suggest waiting at least 8 to start weight training. It is very easy to herniate the incision points, particularly the one where they pull your stomach out. I am speaking from experience here. When i had hernia surgery a couple of years ago my doc made me wait 8 weeks for any heavy lifting. I think that needs to be the protocol for bariatric surgery.
Yes, they did mention 6-8 weeks for weights and I think 8 is good too, though I'll speak about it more with my surgeon. I am a bit worried about my job though as I'm a nurse in a busy nursing home. I'm constantly bending, twisting, lifting, pulling and on my feet an entire 8-10 hours. Although this will probably be good exercise, I'm worried about overdoing it. I'm also going to bring this up.
