So now what do I do with all these clothes?

First things first: I owe you guys an update on my progress. Your stories and advice were instrumental in my success. I'm at my dr's goal weight but I could stand to lose another 10 lbs. More on that on a separate post.

Heres my predicament : I have a ton of very nice clothes about two sizes too big. Probably several thousand dollars worth. I'm not in the mood to re-buy everything in the wrong season (buy spring clothes in the spring = full retail)

I've had my suits tailored until they can't be anymore. My deal is my dress shirts. I have several 17-1/2 - 18 (XXL) and I now wear 16-16 1/2. (L-XL).

Any ideas? At $70-$125 a shirt..... Blah.

Find a local consignment store that deals in higher end merchandise.  Let the store sell it and pocket the cash or use it in store credit to buy new stuff that actually fits!  Finding a good consignment store kept me clothed from a size 26 to a 6 without breaking the bank.  I just "traded" clothing every few months.

Consignment shop?  Yard sell, less money.  on-line.  I just donated mine and gave my DD the tax write off.  As she was the one that bought most of the good ones.  Three of us always rotated cloths as we seemed to always be on a diet at different times.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

thredup is a great place--Just a side note, however.  They will not accept (no matter the quality) any clothes that have been altered or tailored for resale.  You are, infact, donating them if you send them.

Thanks for the responses! The problem with thredup is that they only take women's clothing. I don't see many used mens clothes on ebay. I'll have to check on a local consignment shop. Has anyone had any luck altering or tailoring a shirt and does it make economic sense?

Hopefully you can sell some of them -- what you can't sell would you consider taking to the YMCA or find out if there's a place that outfits males who need to wear nice clothing while interviewing for a job? someone who doesn't have the means for professional wear or someone who has been out o job force for a while? Colleges will often take decent suits, ties and the like for graduating students entering the professional work force for the first time.

and finally--congratulations to YOU on your weight loss! I bet you feel terrific!

I am still in the middle of the process, but I just went through my closet and pulled about 10 suits that I'm already too small for.  It sucks--one still had tags on it. I may take them to a consignment store but I'm leaning toward taking them to one of those dress for success places and just writing them off.  I thought of having them tailored but I still have a handful in smaller sizes, and lots of my jackets have sleeves that would be difficult to tailor.  Plus I kind of want new clothes anyway.
