SO CONFUSED! ! !!

I need some help.  I'm a bit confused.  Last week went to meet with the new surgeons office with the APRN.  He told me I should be eating 1000-1200 calories.  He said my protein was on target at 70 grams.  I was eating around 500 calories with a target of 30 grams of carbs.  So I went to my nutritionist and she gave me a diet of 1200 calories......  How in the world are you suppose to get allllll that food in for 1200 calories??????! ! ! !! !  !

I'm only 6 months out.  I feel that is ALOT of food.  I was losing weight at 500 cals. For the past 2 days since my nut visit, I was able to get in around 700 cal and tried to keep it at 30 carbs.  No change on the scale the past 2 days.  I wasn't hungry at all eating 500.  Isn't it way to soon to be at the higher calorie range at 6 months out???  I have 70 lbs to go to goal.   Any advise would be great! ! !   Thanks so much in advance.  :)

A LOT of Drs and NUTS have programs that are like that..

my Dr included..but while reading this forum before surgery,

I decided to keep it under 800 as long as possible to maximize weightloss during the " honeymoon" phase

and to tell the truth I was probably only eating between 400-500 calories for at least the first 5-6 months because that's all I could eat..

Frisco likes to say to under eat your sleeve,

this journey is not about how much you CAN eat but how much you SHOULD be eating...

never stuff yourself, eat till satisfied..

Let's face it stuffing ourselves is why we got in trouble in the first place..

Both also told me I was in starvation mode.  I wish my surgeon didn't leave the practice.  I LOVED HIM! !   I pretty much have been doing this on my own since my 2 week post op visit when he told me he was leaving.  I went to a new bariatric center a couple of weeks ago.  said I was doing good with my weight loss and said to up the cals to 1000 plus.  Really???  I would like to know what the ideal carb limit is for this honeymoon phase.  My preop diet was 1300 calories with a pre sleeve stomach.  I did very well on that.  I would think 1200 with a sleeve would be well into maintenance.

At my last Drs appt..my PA also told me I was in starvation mode,

don't know that I believe it b/c I. Went off the rails for 5 days last week w/ Easter and all..

and it didn't kick start anything for me..

I follow an Adkins type diet..always getting 80g protein..a gallon of water and 20-30 g carbs a day

At your point post-op I'd keep my calories at 500-600 if you an even get that in

always weigh, measure and log your food...it really helps and keeps you accountable.

The nutritionist in my surgeon's office told me to eat around 1200 cal also. I didn't listen and stuck to the 600-800 cal and under 40g of carbs until I got all the weight off.  If you could stay at 500, then I say do it.  I personally could never stay that low and was usually closer to 800.  Now, I wish I could only eat that much again!

I could increase to 600 not a problem.  3 meals a day, some veggies in between, and all tha****er is good for me! ! !  It just baffles me how they think someone with a 12.5 mm stomach can eat all that! ! !

Thanks.  I always log and measure my food.  Very diligent about that.  As I got on the scale this morning, UP 4 lbs, I'm going back to what I was doing.  30 carbs, 500 cal and 70 protein.  I get like 80 oz of water in.  Thanks! ! !

You have to do what you feel is right and I am not a doctor so I can't give you medical advice.  I personally would not listen to them on the number of calories.  Are you feeling okay?  Are your labs off?  If not, then don't change a thing.  Overeating and/or eating the wrong food is what got us to being in the weight situation we were in when we had the surgery.  Keep trying to hit your protein and even up it a little.  I am 16 months out and maybe hitting the 1000-1200 but usually it is less.  I would not up your calories until you absolutley have to.  If you are not hungry and functioning well on 500 calories then keep on doing it.

Thanks Jackie.  I just had my 6 month labs taken.  no word back on them yet.  Just passed out in the lab when they took the 17 tubes of blood for that.  they pulled the needle out, put the bandaid on and out I went.  Rushed to ER for the day, 2 bags of IV fluid given.  They said hyperventilation.  But I wasn't breathing fast.  they said you dont have to.  My CO2 level was way low.  Other than that incident and the severe constipation issue a few months back I'm doing marvelous.  NO issues.  Just losing weight slowly.  Thats why I dropped cals and carbs down and lost 7 lbs in the last 4 weeks.

I can only tell you what worked for me and what my doctor told me to do.  He wanted me to stay under 800 calories until goal.  He preferred that I keep my calories as low as possible while still getting all my protein in and staying hydrated.  At six months out, I was close to goal ( I am a lightweight) and eating about 600-800 calories while taking in about 80 grams of protein.  When I would stall, he would always want me to reduce my carbs down to 20 grams and increase my protein to over 100 grams while keeping my calories constant.  I followed his advice and have seen many other people do very well with the same program.  Of course you should check your labs and stay connected with your doctor, but this is my best advice and what I, myself would do.  Good luck to you and I hope you figure this out and do what is best for you.
