Going Public
I would post a full-length pic on fb so people can be aware that you have lost weight. Whether or not you choose to admit you have had surgery is up to you.

Definitely a good idea. I'll be posting some pics between now and then so that people have a heads up. Then, if any actually ask, I'll tell them what's up on an individual basis. (And then they can gossip amongst themselves if they so choose!)

If it makes you happy then post it, follow your gut.
I would post pictures and see the reaction, then explain. People still have to know how hard and dedicated you've been. It's NOT an easy way out!
when I told people I was going to get weight loss surgery, most said "lucky you, your going to melt"
not the case as of yet lol
Be proud and let those pics shine!!! :)
Thanks. This would be a lot easier if I wasn't feeling so conflicted. A month ago, I was certain about posting, but now I'm not. So sticking to pictures seems like the best for now.

Regardless of whether or not you announce you have had surgery, your body WILL be the big topic of conversation, like it or not. 80 pounds is really, really significant.
Accepting that you will be a topic, what appears to be your best way to deflect attention? I found that cagey responses like "yeah, I've been working hard on diet and exercise" or, even more details about diet and exercise gave the "no news here - no magic, just move along" message that allowed the topic to change fairly quickly.
fir the record, the general public doesn't know I have had surgery.

Sleeved 6/12/13 - 100 pounds lost to get to goal!
You make a good point - I should go into this with a few scripts in mind so that I'm prepared with responses!

Have a great time at the conference. I did the same 'outing' myself mostly in an attempt to diffuse attention and not make it a topic. I surprised myself by appreciating the support and even liking some of the attention (it was caring vs nosy).
When I came back to work after a month the closer crew that knew I was out for WLS gave me a compliment or two and same with family who hadn't seen me for a few weeks. Just this week, down about 80 pounds (343 this morning) I've had three double takes from colleagues that I only bump into every a few times a year. The look they gave me... like somethings different and you have lost weight...unsettling and exciting all in one. I was surprised it took so long, surprised how good it feels, and surprised how awkward the conversations were (one was to shy to ask and one took place quickly passing in a hallway and I could only manage to say 'thanks and I've been working hard to drop some lbs').
Let us know how it goes. I've been surprised how I react emotionally to accepting attention and support and from different people. So fascinating to me to self reflect on my own reactions (and unknown needs/desire).
Thanks! It will be an awesome convention.
I'm glad that you had such a positive experience sharing your journey with friends and colleagues. :D I imagine that my experience will be positive too! I can't wait.
