I just had my 2 week post op appt so I can start soft foods. A few days ago I started having burning in my stomach (has this immediately post op for a few days). The doctor increased protonix to twice a day and continue carafate, try tums, etc.

anyone have stomach burning? Anything that really helped? How long did it last?

thanks!

I sometimes still have that burning feeling, even after two years. Most of the time I'll have something to drink or a couple of tums and it goes away.

Hi yes this is common and unpleasant :(

If the protonix don't give you relief in a week ask to try another PPI like Losec as everyone reacts differently to them.

Also I would recommend sticking to the basic foods (1 scrambled egg was my go to) and take note of anything different you introduce, introducing one day at a time. This is a great way to see what sets you off and helps you eliminate them from causing you distress.

For instance I learned very quickly tomatoes and baked salmon were a definite no go, but avocado and egg were both really soothing. Every one will be different.

Good luck I hope you get some relief soon!

Hang in there. The first few months can be awful, not only are you recovering from a major operation but you have to relearn everything you thought you knew about your body/nutrition.

Mine would always be worst at night so I invested in a tri pillow which allowed me to prop myself up and at least get the acid staying away from flushing upwards & doing any damage to my esophagus. Might help you?

I've been sleeping on the couch with 3 pillows...it was so bad last night I slept on the end of the sofa with my head completely up. I didn't by understand why it was good for 2 weeks then came back?

600 mL is 20 ounces. You MUST drink more. You should be aiming for 2-3 liters a day. Right now, hydration is your number 1 job.
