Hey Jill, Oh my god, I so agree wtih you on this, I am so very tired of hearing everyone say all the things you listed.  People are just plain ignorant and dont understand what is to be obese and what we have to endure and go through in our lives. Having this surgery was the best thing I could of ever done for myself both emotionally and physically and especially medically.  I am healthier now and I am so happier with myself. So to all the synics out there keep your opinions to yourself.  We are great people here on obesityhelp and we all know what we are doing and why!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for posting this, I so do agree with you on all of it. Hugs KimC

I'm with you Kim! I too "am on a fantastic journey to health, happiness and a great life!" I can't wait to start my new life, probably in the first part of January. I want to get myself to the gym as much as possible before then and hopefully lose 10 pounds too!

I'm SOOOO with ya... and I totally understand the desire to talk about it with people... it's not like I'm taking out a billboard or anything, but the quesitons will come soon enough, and it just seems simpler to me if friends/family know in advance... The other day one of my friends reacted by saying "Surgery?  But that's so.... drastic"! Riiiiiiight... and spending the remainder of my life as morbidly obese only to eventually croak from something like diabetes isn't? Marilyn

Like Heidi, I told EVERYONE and never heard a single negative comment ....well at least to my face LOL.  Everyone here at work and in my personal life was thrilled and excited for me and remains so to this day. Last night I went out to dinner at a Spanish Tapa bar and while there saw a client I hadn't seen in 2 years.  She and her husband were not only happy for me they thought it had literally changed me to a vibrant person radiating good health.  They wanted me to talk to their daughter who is a negative cycle with major weight issues that are affecting her health.  Hey, if she wants to talk and ask questions, I'm here for her. The point is...surround yourself with POSITIVE people and you will uplifted.  Surround yourself with negative people and life will always be difficult, sad, worriesom, and frankly, not much fun. Your responses are excellant!!!

Pat--you are so right---by telling everyone about what we are going through it gives us an opportunity to help others, see who our real friends are, and also weed out the idiots in our lives!

From my profile - 7/13/04 I met an Herbal-Life A-hole today. While talking to someone else about WLS she popped in with her "Oh, That's so drastic! I sell Herbal-Life. Too bad I didn't meet you earlier. I lost BLAH BLAH BLAH pounds on it." I responded, "How long do you think it will take you to gain it all back?" It shut'r right down and the snickers from the people in earshot were priceless. Feel free to use it if you like. One of my better days. Don't worry about what the normals say. Do what you need to do. kp

"Go sell crazy somewhere else; we're all stocked up here."

--Why don't you just PRETEND you had the surgery and don't eat so much! I actually had my respiratory doctor say this to me when I was doing my pre-op testing.  Even some people in the medical feild are ignorant of our journeys.  As long as we are educated then just ignore them!!

Over the years, I have had complete strangers walk up to me and tell me that I am "killing myself by eating to much" or tell me "maybe if you would excercise more and cut down on the sweets" i would loose weight. These people did not even KNOW me, I never had a sweet tooth and I excercised probably more than they did! When a friend or family member would say they were worried about me having the surgery, and I knew it was out of concern for me. I would explain to them exactly how my family doctor explained it to me. That I was headed for a heart attack down the line. He explained that my health was deteriorating due to my obesity. I had a stroke and i developed high blood pressure and sugar diabetes. Once I told my friends and family that I would either have to have this surgery or I would be having a quad-truple bypass in the future, They understood. I think people who don't know about you and don't really care, should be quiet and not express their opinion. I have had my feelings hurt more times over the years than I can count. Why can't people understand that this is not a choice. Its necessary to live a healthy happy life? People are ignorant. and I mean that statement. They talk about things they know nothing about. I am glad we just have each other on this website to support each other.
