Did anyone cheat while on the pre op diet?

I cheated BIG time, my pre-op diet was a month because I had a lot to lose. My goal was 15-20 pounds lost before I had surgery, unfortunately my cheating caught up with me and I only lost about 5 before surgery. Luckily, the surgeon still did the surgery!

I'll 'fess up! I cheated just once. I had been on the diet for about 5 days and was crazy hungry. We went to a restaurant and I ordered and ate a turkey burger. I didn't eat the bun, but I ate the burger and several french fries. I didn't beat myself up about it, but I also never cheated again. I knew I had to get serious about shrinking my liver so my surgery had the best chance of being successful.

I don't advocate cheating, however. This is something you're in for the long haul and it's best to play by the rules right from the start.

Gee, doesn't everyone????? Seems like a perfectly normal thing to do before having this life changing surgery.  Don't worry about it if you did. The important part is to loose several pounds in order to shrink up that liver to get it out of the way of the surgery.

Take it easy, don't worry, BE HAPPY!!!

No, everyone does not cheat.  I followed instructions to the letter.  I'm very concerned for people who are unable to follow a simple pre-op diet.  It's not like it sneaks up on you.  You know well ahead of time what you're expected to do.  It's all part of the preparation for one of the biggest changes any WLS patient will ever experience!

If you are not ready to put down the cheeseburger two weeks before surgery, when the heck will you be?  That time can be used to explore why that relationship with food is so strong.  I agree, though, if you do have a slip, certainly don't beat yourself up about it.  Get back on track and watch the pounds fall away!

Oh yeah, and mine was not even that long - 6 days!!

I actually loathed the pre-op diet food, so I just generally went without until the 4th evening, I couldn't stand it any more.  I got a junior roast beef sandwich from Arby's, ate the meat and less than half of the bun, and then had half of an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie.  That worked to tide me over - I lost about 6lbs in those 6 days, which I think is generally respectable.

My surgeon prescribed the wonderful liquid diet 3 weeks before surgery.  The day I started was Dec. 27, 2007.  I was coming home from Christmas with the family, and I had to start the diet that day.  Say goodbye to stuffing and turkey.  Hello chalk shakes.  The car ride home was 4 hours long, and my darling husband was hungry.  So we go through the drivethru and he ordered a cheese burger.  I wanted to rip that sandwich out of his hands and shove it down my throat paper and all.  I didn't , but I was clearly going through withdrawals at only seven hours into the diet.  Then came the New Year's Party---another chalk shape while people were eating.
I had to go to another room and not be around them.
Did I cheat --yes--I ate a salad, then had the guilt fest and cried.  I thought I blew it.
I stuck with it and lost 10 lbs before surgery.  My surgeon was happy.  But I fessed up about the salad.  At least it was healthy.

I did not cheat however my liver shrink diet wasn't as bad as most.

protein shake
small fruit
protein shake or protein bar
small fruit
salad with fresh veggies 1 serving fat free dressing 3 oz lean meat
small fruit.

I did have a hard time the last 3 days b4 surgery because we were on vacation and eating out was so tough we left 3 resturants because they didn't have fat free dressing.  I am going to have to carry that with me after surgery...

the beef broth I had after surgery was the best tasting food I have had in a very long time.  weird hunh..

I ate lots of ice chips..

I figured if my surgeon was counting on me I was going to let him have a good body to work on.
I did suck on some bread.  I am a bread junkie.  I didn't swallow though. lol.

lots of ice thats what I did.  I wish you luck.. just think afterward we will be able to eat food but in small amounts.  I went off caffenee a long time ago and I didn't have that with draw.  before my liver shrink I made myself sick on sweets literally sick so I wouldn't want it...

good luck I will pray for you

No, I did not.  I kept my eye on the goal of surgery.  I did not want my doctor to open me up and close me back up because my liver was too fatty, and that has happened to some people.  Also I wanted a lap RNY and I wanted the liver to shrink enough to insure that this would be possible and that there would be less of a chance of my surgeon nicking the liver during surgery.  This is the beginning of a new life style.  It is only 2 weeks.  If you cannot commit for 2 weeks, how are you going to commit for a lifetime?  If you are seriously looking for permission to cheat, then perhaps you need to rethink your readiness for surgery and reschedule it for a time that you can commit yourself to the plan.  You are not giving up foods forever, just for a short period of time.  By the way, I lost 40 lbs on my preop diet.    It was a great way to start my journey!
