STUPID QUESTION: McDonalds Milkshakes
Okay, so I am on the 10 day pre op liquid diet (clear liquids and protein shakes only) prior to my lap band. Today, day 5 of not eating solid food and starving, I caved and got a mcdonalds milkshake. I rationalized that "hey, a milkshake IS liquid!" I know its best to follow your doctors orders, yada yada. But I am allowed to have dairy and ice cream. What is most important to do in the pre op diet, avoid fat so your liver shrinks? I'm confused...
So my question is: Is a milkshake ALLOWED? And can I cave and do a milkshake a day? Ugh. Please help!!!

she never said she was on a clear liquid diet so a milkshake, while not a good choice at all, still qualifies as a choice! Personally the thought of that ooky nonsense going into me does me wrong but that's just me! I guess if i wanted a shake i'd make it at home with low carb ice cream, skim milk and some protein powder.....my own idea/concoction. Be Well and enjoy your day. ANDI
I think I'd stear clear of the milkshakes. The small milkshake has 420 calories and 72g carbs. The reason most doctors put you on an all liquid or low carb diet prior to surgery is to shrink the liver in order to make the surgery easier and not have to convert to an open surgery because the liver is in the way. My advice is to find a protein drink that you like, drink Crystal Light, chicken broth, SF Jello, all of those should be allowed on a clear liquid diet. Pretty much anything you can see through. Stay away from the sugar and the fat! You're just hurting yourself in the long run! Good luck!

Uh, there's a lot of fat in that milkshake. A milkshake a day?!? Uh.... NO. You'd be better off breaking the "liquid only" rule and having a chicken breast or something.
Are you SURE that the doctor told you that ice cream was ok on your pre-op diet?!?!?

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
If you were "starving", why didn't you have another protein shake instead of a fattening, nutritionally void milkshake? Think about this. Seriously. Does it make sense to you? I'm not trying to be nasty, but I don't understand why you would CHOOSE a McD's milkshake?

It sounds like either someone is giving you conflicting information or you're not getting a good understanding of what they're saying.
On the first line of your post you say you're only allowed clear liquids and protein shakes. Later on you say you're allowed dairy and ice cream. Dairy and ice cream are not clear. Clear means you can see through it.
I would suggest that you call them and ask for clarification.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. To clarify, the first five days it is clear liquids only. The next five days I am allowed clear liquids AND dairy, ice cream, ie non-clear liquids.
At the end of the day, I have realized that my health is not worth risking for a silly milkshake. The milkshake was a bad choice, and since then, I have been sticking to the rules strictly. I've only been drinking apple juice, sugar free jello, crystal light, and sugar free popsicles.
I think my problem is similar to what most people face during the pre-op diet: I am nervous and stressed out about surgery, and thus my natural reaction is to turn to food to cope. Of course, I have to re-learn new ways to cope now. I read on hear one person's comparison about the pre-op diet, she said "Its like asking a heroin addict to go cold turkey for 10 days before they enter rehab". I thought that was a great comparison.
Thanks everyone for your input, I really appreciate it! I'm nervous about surgery, but reading everyone's success stories and similar concerns is quite comforting and reassuring.
