I know this may be a bit late, but maybe The Learning Channel will be rebroadcasting the shows again latter tonight or within the next few days ..   A lineup consisting of 3 shows, "The Half Ton Dad", "The Half Ton Mom" and the "Half Ton Teen" (actually, 800 lbs.) ....

I thought it interesting (and a bit annoying) that the description for "the Half Ton Mom" show states that she "undergoes life-threatening gastric bypass surgery" ..      (like wasn't her SO itself more "life-threatening"?  )

TLC will also have an update show tonight re:  Nebraska's half-ton nan celeb, Patrick Duell,  who is apparently back in the hospital after a major regain following his RNY ..

She managed to get through her WLS fine. Was loosing weight and excersising in her bed. She had a heart attack. I do not beleive it is one of those things we can say was from the WLS or was from being SMO. I cant remember the exact wording, but I got the impression that they had a hard time looking after her, possibly even trying to revive her due to her size.

I watched all 3 of these shows earlier. The "Half Ton Mom" made me really sad. I thought "Half Ton Dad" really done the best and I was excited to see how the "Half Ton Teen" turned out... His mom was really the one "killing" him, IMO.
The other teen the 16 year old who had to lose 30 lbs before surgery didn't seem like he would be a very good candidate, he acted very immature.

Ya think he was immature? I think his mom was too coddling...I started to wonder if she was in love with him...it was a creepy relationship.

Once he is skinny and out of that chair she is going to have a break down. No one to make fat or baby.

I think she should have been put in jail for not helping him but enabling him.

When you are taught a certain way to eat then how much control do you have if you do not know better.

I was so angry at the mother.

You're thinking of the 19 year old. He is the one with the mother who takes care of him, hand and foot. I don't think they had a creepy relationship, I do believe they have an unhealthy one. She lost her first child when he was 19 months old, so she is over-protective of the older one. I think at very least she realizes she does have a problem, that is the first step in solving it. I don't think she should've been jailed but she does need mental help which she got at the end of the show. I can certainly understand your anger but I am looking at the mental aspect. To her, she was probably doing the right thing.

The one I am talking about had the mother who did not coddle him. She told him straight up "hey you eat too much" and she was talking about how they would buy healthy food and he would eat all of it. I could tell he openly had a very strong addiction to food and needed help. I think before he should even consider WLS he needs counseling.

I watched those shows as well. Was so sad to hear the mom passed away, but boy did her message reach a lot of people. Youre so right too about how they described the surgery, after they gave her a year to live. Even though she died, she ended up giving courage to many others so they could step up and save their own lives. Anyone else watch "half ton man", the older show? I like the doctor they showed, hes a no BS, straight forward guy. He told it like it is, have to respect people like that. anyway just my two cents! :)

I was wondering if the show would try to slant things to make it look like the WLS was responsible for her death, and people would then be scared off by it, or whether they would emphasize that she was in such poor shape to begin with b/c of her long-standing SO and co-morbids that any kind of major surgery would have been such a great risk to her, but that it was worth the risk anyway ..   Sounds like the latter, fortunately ..

I watched all 3 shows. The "Teen" one infuriated me. The mom AND dad should be charged with child abuse and neglect. They brought the food into the house...allowed this child to undergo the trauma of obesity. It's not like the kid had a choice as to what he was going to eat. They were ignorant emotionally. I am still fuming over this example of stupidity.
