How long before getting a perm?

My surgery was on Nov.17th and I would really love to get a permanent. I feel I would look so much better. The question is how long after surgery should I wait? I have not lost any hair yet but I am kinda scared.

One of the books that I was required to read before surgery stated waiting a year because it's so harsh on your hair. There are several beauticians on the board, hopefully they will let you know the tried and true.

I do remember something about how anesthesia and perms don't mix, but I don't remember how long. I bet your hairdresser would know more about it--perhaps. I think the worst that would happen is the perm would just not take or last long, something like that. Hmmmmm good question. Susan S

Good question... and could I add an additional one... has anyone heard of similar wait times for coloring hair?

I had my surgery around the same time as you and my hair is incedibly dry and would not be good "perm material" AND it's falling out - a lot - thus making it not a good candidate for any chemicals. Has yours started falling out? The anesthesia is a consideration for any chemicals being put on your hair but I can't remember if it's before or after surgery that you have to watch out. You may want to post at www.hairlosshelp.com. Good luck! Adasha 247/177

I am a beautican and I recommend that you wait six months. Anestesia can stay in the hair for six months. I have done it after 3 months with no problems. However, if you are not losing any hair and getting in a fair amount of protein, I think it would be okay before the six months. I would recommend a shampoo that removes minerals and medications from your hair. Read the back of the bottle or it may not be the right kind. Go to a salon and ask to see some clarifying shampoos. Remember to use a good shampoo after the perm. Invest in good products it is well worth it. Ask about acid waves that are much more gentle on the hair. Good luck and email me if you have any questions. [email protected] Paula

Hi, I always got a perm once every year. I'm two years post op. The hairdresser says my hair finally looks healthy enough for one. I'm going to wait until the summer until it gets a little longer. I was afraid to do sooner because it was falling out and I was afraid.
