What's your goal weight? (xpost)

We were not given a goal weight, my wife and I are on the same journey, separate, but at the same time.  We have been tracking eachother.  She lost 100 pounds (10/22/08 surgery date) so far and is still seeing losses.  I lost 84 pounds (12/08/08 surgery date) down from 377 and I am seeing losses each week.  Although we both stalled out a few weeks.  My goal weight is 225 pounds because that is a weight I can remember being in High School.  Anything that gets below that is great.  The pounds keep coming off and the clothes keep going out to other people, because they are too big.  It is alright with me.  I do agree that you need to be comfortable with yourself, the scale is not the only measure of success.

Doc told me 175 lbs was the success weight.

I aimed for 150 lbs or less.  I've been there a few times.  I am always hoping to 'get' to goal.

I don't think I (or anybody) gets to certain NUMBER on a scale and immediately decides 'that's it, I'm at goal.'  What then?  I feel it's more of a life-long journey - and you keep making other goals.  If we all magically arrived at 130 lbs and realized that was IT, it would be awfully miserable 'round these parts.

I think many of us do forget that we might already be close to or at goal because we haven't conquered the emotional side of things.

Hi Beth,

You are so right about needing to work on conquering the emotional side of things. I still catch myself feeling 'fat' in my size 6 jeans. Takes time I guess.

I like the idea of this post. It puts things into perspective.

Well, my goal surgeon weight was never really set, he never told me what to aim for, just to sit in the proper BMI for my height. That would be between 98 lbs and 132 lbs (I'm 5'1")... The thing is, I have big boobs, so I generally think a few lbs over 132 and I'll still be okay. I always thought 120 would be about between the low and high BMI range for me. My lowest weight after surgery was 138 and I felt really comfortable there. I wanted to lose more. I fell off the wagon, unfortunately and now sit in the upper 160's. I would like to get back to that weight. If I could I'd be a happy lady. If I could go lower, I would be dreamy. Right now, though, I just want to get under 140 and be satisfied.

Congratulations on getting back on track... I also think that you bring up a good point. You may or may not fall into the BMI for your height because you are not 'statistically' average and that's okay.

Wishing you continued success,

Intially my doctor and I spoke about losing 150 total. I'm 16 pounds from that goal. But my personal goal is to have lost 156 pounds, which would mean I'd lost more than I weigh (22 pounds from that). Ultimately, I'd love to get down into low-mid 140's, but don't know how I would look there. The lowest I can ever remember being is low 150's before I had my son.

I'm thrilled with how I look right now (except for the extra skin), but I wouldn't cry if I got down into single digit pants at some point. As a couple other people said, I too have big shoulders and a huge ribcage (I look like a greyhound when I'm laying down now) so I'm not thinking my top will ever get much smaller. There's still some room to go in my legs though, especially my left ankle. LOL!

My surgeon never gave me a goal, she said when I am comfortable in my own skin I'm at goal.

The lowest ever got was a size 14, so I really thought that was where I would end up.  I wanted to be a normal BMI, so I get my goal at 150 lbs.  When I reached 159 lbs. my surgeon said I'm at goal.  I was smaller than the average woman.

I now fluctuate between 148.5-151.5 and wear a size 10 and I'm happy here.  I've been able to fit into size 8 pants, but they were a little to fitted for my taste.

Now, the skin is a different issue and I'm scheduled for a lower body lift in 6 months, so I'm not really sure where I'll end up.
