i have a question. i has surgery about 2 1/2 weeks ago and i am doing really well physically. no issues. now i know some people might find this crazy that i'm even asking, but please be gentle. any info on this matter will help. i know that everyone says do not drink for 1 year after surgery. in reality, has anyone had a drink this soon? even a small one? giving us the liquid vicadin for pain seems equally as harsh. i am going to watch the ufc payperview tomorrow and would love to have a small drink. thanks in advance. and again... please be gentle.

Taking Vicodin for post op pain isn't in the same realm as drinking alcohol.  That is simply an attempt at rationalization.  You know the answer to your question already.  Sure hope you didn't under go slicing and dicing of your GI tract for naught.
Sorry.  No fuzzy hugs and rainbow kisses from me.

No. No. No. No. No.

You are way too soon after surgery to even consider alcohol. Your liver is working overtime as it is, with the medications from surgery and the toxins associated with rapid weight loss.

Every doctor is different, but you need to ask this question of yours.

Most suggest somewhere between 6 months and a year. You need at least a couple sets of blood work (especially liver enzymes) before you can determine if your body can cope.

Most doctors would prefer that you not drink at all.  Not only does it hit you sooner and harder than before surgery ( I must say it leaves you quicker also) it is so expensive calorie wise.  One fancy coctail could equal half your daily intake or more.  I can't see your avatar in this window so I don't know what type of surgery you had.  If you are lapband you won't even dump and that would make it so easy to take in a lot of calories without even realizing it.  You need to consider this a lifestyle change and only embibe occasionally.  Save alcohol for REALLY special times.

i cant speak for experience, because i havent had my surgery yet.  but i will tell  you that my brother in law is three months out from rny...and he had his first drink one month after surgery.. granted he started with 1/2 cup wine...i think now he chooses the hard stuff, vodka.. im not saying that i recommend drinking/or encourage it... im just saying that your not the only one who wants a drink.. lol.. best of luck to you..

No, I would not do it this soon.
I waited at least 6 months. I am one year out this week, have had no problems to speak of, and now I have an ulcer in my stomach that I believe is from alcohol consumption. I would rather not have an ulcer. It hurts. And if I had known that I could have avoided it by not drinking alcohol, I would have chosen not to drink at all. Just keep in mind that you could end up with an ulcer!
