The DS IS better than RNY
I think it's great that there are studies coming out showing the benefits of different weight loss surgeries. It certainly helps when having to make the decision on what surgery will be best for people. But I still think it would take more than one study with 350 people to convince me it was the better surgery choice. When I was researching RNY there were several studies with up to 20,000 people participating over a 10 year period of time showing the benefits of RNY for type 2 diabetics and the long-term benefits...without the extreme vitamin deficiencies you get with DS (which can cause a whole new set of problems). So I suggest people be very thorough and diligent in their research when considering weight loss surgery. Good luck everyone.

Please see my profile for "more than one study with 350 people."
Also, please know that vitamin deficiencies are NOT an automatic side effect of the DS as you have implied.

I wasn't implying that the vitamin deficiencies are automatic, although I have personally met some women who've had DS and ended up with severe vitamin deficiencies. But you're right, I shouldn't make it sound like it's effects everyone that way. I apologize! In fact, I think we weight loss surgery people end up pitted against each other as to what surgery is better, etc...when the bottom line is that we're all just trying to accomplish the same thing - get healthy and stay healthy. So again, I apologize and only wish everyone success in their weight loss journey whatever it may be!

While not yet diabetic, I was pre-diabetic with insulin resistance so it was only a matter of time. I got the DS not only to deal with my obesity, but in hopes it could help prevent things I saw my parents and grandparents such as diabetes, but also atherosclerosis, and blocked arteries in the brain, lungs and limbs that diet and medication were not resolving.
My blood sugars (and blood fats) are finally perfect. I know genetics were against me, and the DS evened out my playing field.

Add me to the list of DS'ers who are no longer diabetic! I was on insulin for over fifteen years and on insulin resistance-fighting meds for about 11 years (give or take).
I went into the hospital for surgery taking over 160 units of insulin daily and couldn't get a fasting blood sugar under 200. Three days later I left the hospital taking 20 units of insulin and had....dang, the number has slipped my mind. I'm certain my blood sugar then was under 120, though.
I was off insulin within a month, off the oral med within four months, and have had HgA1c results under 5.5 ever since.

AMEN! It is THE BEST obesity surgery.
I have NO more diabetes, NO more sleep apnea, and if I get a pain I CAN take advil. I eat normal food, even had a late night snack last night of 4 slices of bacon AND lost 7 lbs in the last 24 hours.
Oh, and to the person who said the crap about vitamin deficiencies - hullo RNY people have the same problems especially with B.... if you are stupid enough to not follow a vitamin routine after surgery YOU WILL HAVE PROBLEMS no matter WHICH malabsorptive surgery you have!

Yes the DS is better than RNY, not only for resolution of Type 2 Diabetes, but in overall weight loss, long term loss and quality of life after surgery. I say this from the perspective of having lived with RNY for 28 years and DS for 9 months and in any measurable way or from my personal experience the DS is superior..
