Wow, Tina Marie!  You and I had our RNYs on the same date!  After only one week, I'm really shocked that your surgeon is actually letting you eat not just soft foods but baked chicken??  In one sense I am jealous; but on the other hand, I'm so not sure I could tolerate that kind of food yet.  Jell-o, yes; baked chicken...?  Not so sure.  I personally think I need to allow more time for my pouch to heal.  But I'm happy that you at least get to eat!  LOL

Meanwhile, I solved my growling stomach problem earlier tonight by eating one of my surgeon's tomato soup protein supplements.  (He designed his own line, for sale at wlsvitamins.com)  Technically, it isn't a broth, so I was cheating on the clear liquids part, but I figured if I'm going to cheat, at least I should cheat with one of his protein supplements, right?  LOL  And it was goood!  Kinda spicy, too.  Next time I make it, I'm going to use beef broth instead of water to make a tomato beef soup.  (His swiss chocolate shake/pudding supplement is really good too, btw.  Had that for lunch.)

Anyway, if my doctor doesn't mind me starting the protein supplements a little early, I guess I can make it until next Monday to start on soft foods.  Besides, the longer I stay on liquids, the more weight I'll lose.    And boy, do I have a LOT to lose!

Good Evening All-

Okay Veteran's I need your help! You all read what I eat everyday and know that I am diligent about getting my protein in (90g in Protein shakes a day plus another 40 in meals). Just got my 9 month labs and I am still low (5.8-same as my 5 month labs). He (wl surgeon)has now bumped me up to a required 180grams of protein (only counts shakes a day)!

So here is my dilemma: If my diligent efforts are not impacting my labs, how in the heck am I: a) going to get in six (6 shakes) a day plus meals, when I struggle to fit 3 in now? b). What could be wrong with me? I see the protein others get in and it is often far lower than mine and their labs are fine. Am I some freak of nature...? (sorry a little caustic humor). Welcome all input, suggestion and even constructive criticism!

Ok, today's eats:

B: Protein shake- 30g
L: scrambled egg with cheese, 2 pieces of bacon
S: Protein Shake-30g
D: Chicken and roasted veggies
S: Protein shake-30g
S: Maybe another protein shake- 30g

Hope everyone is doing well! Nancy

Hi Nancy,
I am certainly not a veteran, but I have NEVER heard of a requirement of 180 gr protein.  I can understand your dilemma.  You have been so successful with the amount of weight you have lost and you get twice my daily protein.  What reading is the 5.8?  Trying to understand why he would boost the protein so high.

Nancy,
WOW! Can they tell you WHY you are not meeting the protein requirements?? Are you not absorbing this or something?? 180 sounds like a ton! Maybe their labs are off or something.
Maybe there is something depleting the protein??
Your food always seems so good!

Hmmmm..

Nancy,

I understand your frustration. I am actually 4 1/2 years out and was just told last month to up my protein from 90g to 120g daily, thru protein drinks. I'm to the point to where I do a protein drink for breakfast (scoop and a 1/2) so I hit at least 30g, then a drink for morning snack (scoop and 1/2), a drink for an afternoon snack and then another at night after dinner. The plus side to doing them as snacks throughout the day, I don't eat that much with them, normally a piece of cheese and a couple of grapes .

One of the old face-to-face group local group leaders would do a protein drink before every meal and as a snack twice a day (that would get all 180g in). I'm almost afraid to try that because you hear "don't drink your calories" and "liquids escape your pouch faster". While I know this is true, I also know I want all my protein in so I don't lose hair. I do know when I do my breakfast protein drink and eat with it, I feel REALLY full and sometimes have a not so happy pouch .

Hope that helps some.

I have a friend who also had low protein, and his Dr. told him to get all his protein from foods, because some people don't absorb it from the shakes. So he started eating Greek yogurt instead of shakes, and that solved the problem!

I agree with RubyDarkstar on getting your protein from REAL FOOD vs. the supplements.  My surgeon said to fill in with protein drinks if necessary to get to the 60 grams he requires, but to try to get the majority from the real deal.

I have been googling since you posted these questions and have come up with zilch.  I have always been so worried about my calcium, iron and lately my vitamin D.  My protein has evidently been at an acceptable level, because no one has ever said to increase my daily protein.  Hmmmm.
