I also had this issue almost nightly, and was informed potassium was just part of our needs that magnesium was vital. I got the CALM powder that is mixed in water (not a bad taste ) Worked that night!! Beware though it can cause diarrhea start small dose.  Good luck!!

I'm a natural low runner for potassium. I have hypokalemia. I take 20 meq everday and eat foods high in potassium.  I dont' take water pills, etc and have been to an array of specialists. I get like that with the leg cramps when my potassium gets below 3.0.  I know 3.6 is the norm but it's just so hard to get it to keep it there.  When my legs and arms start cramping and I can't move my body, I know it's dangerously low.  Usually my primary advises me to head to the emergency room and I end up getting potassium runs via IV and admitted till I get out of the 1's and into the 3's.

Followup with your primary.  From experience potassium via IV is absolutely horrible. It literally feels like your veins are on fire while it's pumping through your arm.  I know my bariatric surgeon and primary review my bloodwork every 3 months.   I take bariatric vitamin (4/day), my potassium, a magnesium, iron,  dry vitamin D, B 12 sublingual (plus b12 shot once a month), probiotic, and a calcium everyday.

Hi, I can tell you that I have had bad Charlie horses in my legs for 8 years now. It is because my potassium is very low. I am taking a prescription potassium and I have to take 5 pills a day of (80? mg.) . Go to your doctor and ask them to do a blood test on you to check your potassium. There is also a selter water or club soda not sure which one but it has something in it called quinine- not sure of the spelling the docs also say that it helps. I never used it but my mother has. I would go and have your blood checked again.

Calcium and magnesium deficiencies are two big causes of leg cramps.  I have some pretty significant calcium absorption problems and take 7,000 mg of calcium a day, always with half the amount of mgs in magnesium.  So for example, if I take a dose of 500 mg of calcium citrate, 250 mg of that will be in magnesium citrate.    Also, sadly, as much as the spasm hurts, try to stand on the offending leg and walk it off.    You always need to flex the cramped muscle and not point it.   If you can't walk, try to have someone flex your foot towards you.   That will hasten it's demise.  I feel your pain!
