Vitamin Question - AGAIN!!!

Ok, is there someone out there who can give me all the details on vitamins?

I just read another post that said Vit D should be "dry"....what does this mean??

I have read other posts that say that calcium should be citrate and not carbonate....etc.

Can someone please put all the vitamin info in one post (here) so that I can find it all?  I bought some Centrum Silver chewables and come Citrical + D last night, and I have some sublingual B complex (with B-12).   Is this good or should I buy Iron to have on hand?  This whole vitamin thing is confusing me!!!

Thanks so much in advance!

"Dry" D is D-3 and is much more well absorbed by us bypassers. The Centrum chewables should be fine-I take an OTC prenatal vitamin that I just buy at Walmart as my base vitamin, along with Dry D(50-100K), Dry A(50K), vit. K and Vit E, magnesium, and 50 mg of carbonyl based iron besides what is in my prenatal vit, and a B-100 complex 2 or 3 times a week, and 1000 mg of calcium citrate a day. But this is my needs. You kind of have to wait and see what your labs show to see if there are areas you need to address after surgery.

Not to slight anyone on here but you will get a  blue million opinions on what you should and shouldnt take to the point of being ridiculous.  The best person to check with is your nut or your surgeon.

WRONGO!
If I relied on my nut and my surgeon, I would have been WAY off on my labs. They are not all the same. I have had to educate my own surgeon on some things....... Don't just rely on them please, or you will be sorry down the line.

Not to be rude but if you are educating your surgeon I be damned if I would still be with him/her much less letting them cut me open.  My ex mother in law once said the same thing - now she is being treated for being a drug addict from years of telling her dr what she thought was wrong with her and what kinds of meds she needed.

My nut is the one who gave me my vitamin instructions.  My surgeon's office does my labs and adjusts me accordingly.  I figure since they are noted as a center of excellence - somehow I feel they are a hell of a lot more qualified than I am in telling me what I should be taking based on lab results.

Just FYI,
You need to take 8 of these a day total, 2 tablets 4 times a day, no closer than 2 hrs apart to hit the 2000g a day
Iron should be taken with vitamin C for max absorption
B12 needs to be sub-lingual/patch/nasal/injected because we do not have intrinsic factor anymore. Regular pills don't do it.

My point was being is that my surgeon was more than competent on cutting me up, but his lack of nutrition and supplements was weak. Not all nuts are the same either. Some can't get out of the "diet" mode in their advice......and don't get the malabsorbative properties of these surgeries.

We all need to hit the minimums established by the ASMBS ( 74.125.93.132/custom ), and go by labs after. HOWEVER, the labs too may need to be tweaked, for example I had to ask to have my PTH drawn (check to make sure you are having this done, or a Dexascan since that is the only way to know you are leaching it from your bones and teeth!) since it wasn't standard practice in this Center of Excellence I had my surgery at. Their paperwork also said to take Tums and Flinstone vitamins.... and when I asked about it, it is because they know that most people will not follow anything that may be a hassle (read get educated) but will take what tastes good, cheap and easy.

You may want to keep your head in the sand over this, but telling people to just listen to their doc and nut is not cool advice either. Often life has more valuable lessons. We are the ones that will ultimately pay for it with our health.

BTW, on the ex MIL, if she turned into a drug addict it is because she sought out doctors that like to cattle people and give to just shut them up..... THAT is another topic altogether.  Please don't just listen to them either..... get as educated as possible and ask them the hard questions.

Point taken.  As I said I wasnt being rude.  I just cant imagine any doctor or anyone in their practice of bariatrics not knowing what they are doing.  But then I guess that happens everywhere.  Unfortunately not all surgeons have the program for follow up and after care as mine has so I consider myself lucky.  I wouldnt say my head is buried in the sand over the topic but at the same time I dont think its a good idea for people to go by what others post online either.  Kinda like suggesting to someone which kind of surgery they should go with.  Its one of those things where you have to work with your doctor and figure out what works best for you to get the best result.  That was MY point. What works for you may not work for someone else.
