Poll: Treats post-op -- how often or not at all?

I'm just curious about how other folks handle the occasional treat.  Do you allow yourself to have something you consider pretty much off limits once in a while?  Or do you stay away from those kinds of foods altogether?  Do you have a guideline you follow such as one "bad" treat a month?

I'm just over six months post-op and I had an ice cream cone today.  I record everything I eat, so I'll have all my protein for the day and will keep my calories in check.  I don't have any set limit on carbs from my nut, so I think indulging once in a blue moon is okay.  This is the second time I've had ice cream in six months and I don't plan on making it a regular thing at all.

For me, the worse thing that I can do is to totally ban certain foods.  For the most part I choose not to eat high fat/sugary foods, etc. However, on occasion I did  sample the pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving and I will have a little cake at a friend's birthday, etc.  I think anything in moderation is okay on occasion.  Plus I still do Weigh****chers and have the mentality that I am not on a diet and I think of it as a way of life.I think what really keeps me in check is that I work out 5-6 times per week so I really think about what I put in my mouth.  I don't want to break by butt working out for an hour at the gym to burn 500 calories, just to eat something bad in a matter of minutes.  Make sense?

How is dumping not a problem? I think getting a treat every once is a while would be fabulous--certainly a nice part of life! But my concern is the sugar shock/dumping that can come along with it...am I missing something?

I don't dump on sugar.  Of all the people I know in real life who have had RNY, I don't know a single one who does.

Most people with RNY don't dump.  Only about 30% do.  And most who do, can tolerate ten or 12 grams of sugar, which means you could have a cookie or something without dumping, even if you do dump.

It was regular ice cream.  Actually, it was a Drumsticks ice cream cone that you can buy at the store.  It had chocolate and nuts on it.  My kids had bought a big box of them a couple of weeks ago and there was one left in the freezer.

It did have 5 grams of protein!

Hi Leanne

My thought is we are on our way to a 'normal' life, and normal people DO enjoy treats occassionally. I think the important thing is to not let Occassionally become regularly. If I do have a treat I just try to make it a part of my daily calorie intake, in otherwords I'll try to cut something out that I would have normally eaten (I don't mean like a whole meal). I think banning ourselves from the things actually makes us fixate on them. I need freedom from that.
