Hi everyone, I recd my cardiologist clearance and I am scheduled for 3-16-10 so I am reading up on all of my literature from my doc.  I am wondering if anyone can give me some helpful tips on what to stock up on?? I have bought some protein shakes with 30 mg on protein in them. Shall I buy protein powder or make some soups and freeze them? Any suggestions would be so helpful.

Stock up on crystal light and jello too, that and the shakes will be your meals for a few weeks! Good luck!

I'm only 3 weeks out, so not much experience, but I would strongly advise not to stock up on much of any one thing as you have no idea what you will tolerate or for that matter like.  I'm on my 3rd type of vitamin tablet (and they're very expensive) and could only man age to get about half of my choices down, as its very hard to eat with no appetite, it has to be likeable. Also your intake will be so small for the first couple of weeks that everything will last ages.

Good luck, hope it goes well for you.

I'd recommend a variety of foods on your 'okay to eat' list, but not too much of any one thing. For one, for a while, you will eat Very Little, and a can of soup could last you 4+ days. For two, your taste buds may change, so things you like now may turn you off later.

The only reason to shop, really, is that it's fun to look forward to and prepare for post-op life. To save money, though, you might just shop after your surgery and follow the cues from your body.

I tried every kind of protein drink, and after surgery, I couldn't stand any of them. The fruity juice protein drinks came closest, but even those made me wince a little. ugh. I still have tubs-o-the-stuff in my cupboard.  Still, I know lots of OH'ers who had no problem with protein drinks.

Congrats on your 3-16 date!

I suggest getting samples of a variety of protein shakes because what you like now, you might not like so much post-op.  You can use ready to drink ones or powder that you mix yourself, whichever you prefer.

Make sure you have your vitamins on hand.  I don't know which surgery you are having.  The vitamins you need depend on the type of surgery.

Have low calorie, sugar free, decaf drinks like Crystal Light, sugar free Koolaid, decaf tea, and herbal tea.

Check with your doc about what foods you'll be able to eat the first week or two.  Just remember you'll only be able to eat small amounts.  One can of broth will last you for a couple of meals.  Stuff that will probably be on your doc's list include broth, cream soups, sugar free Jello, sugar free pudding, sugar free popsicles, and yogurt.  I suggest Greek yogurt, because it's much higher in protein than regular.

Have Tylenol at home.  You  might want some Gas-X, too.

I wouldn't stock up on any one thing.  You may or may not tolerate things differently after your surgery.
I'd buy a small assortment of things on your approved list of foods.  See what you like after surgery and what your body will allow you to eat without making you feel sick or causing you any stomach distress.
Also what tastes good now may not taste so good to you after the surgery.  Not sure why this is, but it's a common theme heard over and over.

Good luck with the surgery.

Hi,

I am 1 wee k out of surgery today and like everyone else has said try not to stock up on any 1 thing cause your taste buds do vary, as far as vitamins i take flinstone chewables i also take 3 tums a day and have gas-x on standbye . I drink 3 protein shakes a day for a total of 60g a day and maybe 2-3 tablespoons full of either applesauce, mashed potatoes, sf jello, sf pudding, and of course broths. I also have eating 4 cheese puffs(put it in your mouth and suck on them and they desolve so mushy) a day that taste so good compared to everthing else. Today i ate 1 scrambled egg well half of it. i only had the white grape of crystal light but the walmart brand (great value)  sf powders are the best to me along with hawaiian punch brand and kool-aid brand.

Hope this help,

Congratulations to having your surgery

What surgery did you have?  The vitamins you need depend on your surgery, but Flinstones are not adequate for adults that had WLS.

Are you taking the Tums for calcium or for indigestion?  Because they contain calcium carbonate which is not absorbed well in people after RNY, VSG, or DS.

And cheese puffs?  At one week after surgery?  If that really on your doc's food plan?

I can't help myself.  It's like a compulsion.  Maybe I should bring it up with my therapist next week?
