IM SOOO CURIOUS ABOUT THE D.S.???
Hey NJ! I had the DS, it combines the restriction part of surgery where your stomach is made smaller, and the malabsorptive part of surgery, where you bypass parts of your intestine so not as many calories (but also vitamins, minerals, etc) are absorbed. was 430 pounds to start, and hover around 168-172 right now. I'm gotten lax about sugar and carbs, eating way less of them than I did pre-op, but still way more than I did while rapidly losing. My no's are rice, pasta, white breads, and white flour products. I can eat a bit, but a full portion and I'm too filled, uncomfortable really, and get really really gassy in a few hours. It's controlled in public (grin), but I wouldn't eat a plate of pasta and do yoga a few hours later. (grin, well, not if I wanted to be allowed back into class!) My yes's are I can eat anything in moderation, including a snack of cake, or ice cream, etc.... again, in a reasonable amount, and not everyday. I am able to fit in any chair in a room, movie theater, airplane, etc. I can keep up with others my age, and even a little younger. I can shop in a regular sized store, find sales, and GASP even borrow an outfit from a friend! I work at monitoring my blood values, and adding/deleting supplements as needed. I can't count on my primary to be on top of this, so it's my job. He orders the blood values, I read them with him, and figure out what to do.
Others, including my niece, have had a rougher time with this surgery, and others have sailed thru with great ease. I'm middle of the road. I'm glad I did it, but realize it's not for everyone. If you have questions, PM me, or I can give you my number.... Good Luck with your research. Mary C

The difference between the LapBand and the DS is much like the difference between a bicycle (Band) and a Ferrari (DS).
The DS is a mildly-restrictive, highly-malabsorptive surgery that targets fats. DSers only absorb 19% of the fats we eat, so---wwe eat full-fat EVERYTHING. Bacon, cheese, nuts, butter, heavy cream, well-marbled steaks, etc. And despite all this fat we eat, our cholesterol numbers run between 90-120.
Our 'OKs' are pretty much everything, although simple carbs are still absorbed completely, and can make us fat if we over-indulge. We don't really HAVE any across-the-board "No-nos"---just individual differences/preferences.
We have the same stomach as the Sleeve, but with an intestinal bypass similar to the RNY. We still use the upper part of the duodenum, but have a longer bypass overall, so our vitamin and supplement requirements are different. Not necessarily MORE, just different.
I've had zero complications, lost 165 (so far). I don't own any scales, and only weigh at the doc's office---but when I got out my shorts this spring, last year's were TOO BIG! (Teehee!!!)
