I have the "major leakage" issue at night randomly. It keeps me from going on any vacations or overnight things. Just horrible.
I never read about this before. My mom has an issue with iron causing diarreah she had a non WLS related issue with her bowels. You never know what this could be. I would also engage your primary care physician, not your surgeon. My mother believe it or not has to take imodium to keep her iron levels up or she gets diarreha. Once in a blue moon I might have a mess, but it is usally from something I have eaten. My mother had to go to an oncologist to figure out what was wrong with her. She did not have cancer, but they finally figured out what was the matter. Best of luck and dont give up, you never know who will figure out what is wrong with you.
My grandmother (age 80, not a WLS patient) had a problem with bowel leakage last year, in fact it resulted in full blown incontinence a couple of times. There were even some very public incidents that left her (and me) truly embarrassed. To my surprise, the problem had been going on for almost two years, but my grandmother did not tell me.
The PCP (a quack IMO), told her to load up on fiber and immodium. This did not help the problem at all. After much research, we ended up in the office of a very caring, young Gerontologist (doctor specializing in people over 50).
She told us that this problem is VERY common among those over 50, but is often undiagnosed due to fear of a diagnosis of incontinence. She said that more often than not, the problem is actually constipation! That the stool becomes hardened and difficult to move, and that the "new" stool just kind of leaks out around it.
She prescribed a dose or two of Miralax a day. My grandmother started the Miralax the day of that appointment. She has NEVER had one single incident of leakage since starting the Miralax-a-day routine a year ago.
I praise this doctor for giving my grandmother her life back. If we had not found her, my grandmother would have turned into a shut-in within a short period of time.
