BRAT diet for diarrhea? What about protein?
Get your protein with hot or cold protein drinks, mix with water - not milk.
You might take probiotic or yogurt with live culture to put back the good bacteria in your bowel that the diarrhea is flushing out.
Did a bariatric doctor suggest the BRAT diet?? I would think it is not appropriate for a new bariatric patient.

Don't worry about protein. Follow your doctors advice. The brat diet is to help firm your BMs so you don't dehydrate. This is much more important than protein. OH members are not doctors and should not override medical advice. Loris

I was 5 months out and hospitalized for 9 days...I didn't have diarrhea but I was on a total all clear liquid diet the full time and went home with that same diet for 10 more days....you will be fine, do as the doctor's office advised and make sure to get in plenty of fluids....hope you feel better soon...Laurie
Honestly, take Nursie's advice. It doesn't matter if you take in zero food during those two days as long as you stay hydrated. I just spent a week in the hospital NPO with an IV just to keep me hydrated. I have ulcers at the anastamosis junction of the jejunum as well as at the junction in the small bowel and can not eat without intense pain. I can finally ge****er down as of today. The food/protein part is the last thing you should worry about at this point. Just keep sipping tha****er!! And stay away from those sugary sports drinks...H2O is just fine!
I'm going through this now, as well. My protein is mostly coming from Greek yogurt and trying to eat toast, but my main concern is hydration. Been this way since last Sunday and it sucks. Saw the GI during the week and he put me on Flagyl (yup, diarrhea is one of the possible side effects) for an intestinal infection caused by aggressive treatment for anastomotic ulcers. It's getting better, but it sucks that I couldn't take the chance and accompany my husband to the gym this morning. Unfortunately, Imodium isn't working. I have a home gym, so at least I can work out today.
