For those of you that are preop about to have your surgery, I thought I would let you know that Synthroid can be crushed. I found this out the hardway.  I take Synthroid and have for years.  Prior to my surgery, I went to my pharmacist and gave him a list of all my meds and asked him which one came in liquids, could be crushed, came in capsules, sublinguals or injectables.  I take alot of meds and all but 2 fell into these categories.  The 2 medications were my cholesterol medication which I was told I didn't have to take anymore and my Synthroid.  He said it had to be taken whole as is.  I didnt' say anything to anyone and I just didnt' take it for 3 weeks, I figured what could a few weeks do.  Well, when my Endocrinologist found out, she flipped and said it can be crushed what do you think they do for babies and she proceeded to show me the packaging insert from the manufacturer where it specifically says it can be crushed.  So, in those 3 weeks, my TSH went up 3 points.  I went back on it at an increased dose and all was fine.  Moral of the story, take all your medication as prescribed.

Oh for goodness sakes!  Synthroid pills are tiny and there is absolutely no reason why you can't swallow them after gastric bypass.  I cannot believe you went for three weeks without taking your medication.

I take Levoxyl and Cytomel, simply chew them up.  Always have.  My endo instructs all her patients to.  Says it's easier absorbed.

This is a great thing to mention to folks.  Thank you for putting it out there.

I just asked my pharmacist last week about my synthroid.  She said it can be crushed, but would be bitter.  I'm intrigued about being advised to chew them for better absorption.  I'll check into that.  I've had my thyroid completely removed due to cancer and have a hard time keeping my tsh steady.  I'm hoping that less body fat will help settle it down and be consistent.
