400 lbs...will surgery even help me?

Yes, surgery will help you, but it will still take some effort on your part for the rest of your life. If you are hoping for a magic bullet that will work forever with minimal effort on your part, that doesn't exist, and you may as well not bother because you most likely won't be successful in the long run. I started at 379 and am maintaining now at 142 at 3 years out. The DS has the best stats for success, but it still takes work, especially as you get further out. Good Luck in whatever you decide.

Chances are the band would not help you enough.  I would look at DS or RNY at your weight.  However, a surgeon that performs all four types of surgery can help you decide which would be best for you.

The effects do not only last one year.

With RNY, you malabsorp calories for a few years and you have a smaller stomach for the rest of your life.

With DS, you have a smaller stomach and malabsorb stuff forever.

You're right that it's just a tool, but the tool does not go away after one year.  The tool will help you forever and ever.  You just have to do your share of the work forever and ever, too.

Look at the side effects of each surgery too.  The DS has a lot of issues with smelly gas and constant diarreha.  Many RNY patients also have some pretty foul smelly gas issues.  Are you in a situation where that will be acceptable?

My sister is an attorney and one of her clients wanted to sue his surgeon because he lost his job after surgery.  The other people in the office said that they could not stand the way he smelled.  Do you work where constant bathroom breaks will be acceptable?

The surgery is only a tool.  I only can speak for RNY.  I had RNY and the honeymoon with that lasted for a little over two years.  Now I get hungry again and gain weight again.  RNY surgery gives you 100 pounds off for free.  Whatever you eat or drink for the first two years, it is pretty much a guarantee you will drop 100,  Any other weight loss is up to your diet and exercise.  You can lose all of your excess weight if you want to work hard enough to do that.

RNY gives you a good tool bedause you wil not get hungry.  They bypass the portion of the stomach that produces hunger hormones.  You will not be able to eat very much and you might also dump if you eat too much sugar or fat,  And you body does not absorb the calories when you do eat.  Eventually the body adjusts to that and you get hungry again, you can eat a lot at one time, and you absorb the calories from the food that you eat.

After the honeymoon period, bounce-back weight gain begins for most RNY'ers.

Weight loss surgery can be a tool that you could use to change your life forever.  Study, talk to others, read the internet boards and make an informed choice.  It is your decision and your journey,

Ok, you posted before I had coffee, so bear with me.  Shall we address the several bull****laden points in your post? Yes, I think we shall!

Look at the side effects of each surgery too.  The DS has a lot of issues with smelly gas and constant diarreha.  Many RNY patients also have some pretty foul smelly gas issues.  Are you in a situation where that will be acceptable?

The DS does NOT mean you are going to have the squirts and farts of doom.  If a DS'er eats a bunch of white carbs, and in some cases sugar, then yeah, might be some paint-peeling gas etc. but this has been found to be a load of crap. If you did a bit of research, or even scanning over on the DS board, you would see this.  As far as RNY patients, same thing.  Some people end up gassy, but once again, they eat the crap they shouldnt, just like a non-WLS person, farts that can peel paint!  You eat clean, most will poop clean!

RNY gives you 100 poundsfor free??? Why the hell did I have to pay for surgery if the first 100 pounds were free? Wow, I think I need to ask for a refund, or maybe my doctor will prorate it! Yay!

You say you get hungry again and gain weight again. Are you on plan, getting your protein in? Did you slide back into eating things you KNOW are not good for your body?  And even in the first year or so, it is still possible to gain weight if you dont do what you are supposed to.

The body does TOO absorb calories you eat. Just not all, If your body absorbed NO calories, you would be oh I dont know...KINDA DEAD maybe?  Not everyone gets hungry again, for some, that sensation never returns.  I am one of them, almost three years out and no sense of hunger whatsoever.  I have to remind myself to eat because of this. And saying you can eat a lot at one time, yes, you can eat more than when you first had surgery, but that is the way it is supposed to be. Now if you can eat an entire dinner like a normal person and more afterwards, maybe you should talk to your surgeon about having your pouch and stoma checked and it size. After the honeymoon period, yes, SOME RNY'ers can have weight gain, but it can be possibly prevented by maintaining the good habits you hopefully have formed and stuck to after surgery.  As I said, almost three years out here, no regain, and still going strong.

As you state, weight loss surgery is a tool, this is true.  You are only going to get out of it what you put into it and what level of committment you choose when you start.

Damn, I think this is the longest post I have ever made!  Have a lovely day!

You make some outrageous claims Lady!  WhereTF do you get your facts?  This is a retarded post and you are obviously poorly educated about not only your own WLS, but others too.

Good luck with that ****

At your weight, I would do the Duodenal Switch procedure. I have an aunt that started at 513 pounds.  She's now at 370 because of the surgery, and despite the fact that she cannot help but eat crappy **** like cakes, pies, and her favorite, Snickers.  That (of course) is not the type of food anyone who has had WLS should eat, but despite the fact she cannot follow any rules or logic, she has still lost weight and the surgery helped her lose a whopping 143 pounds.

Just get a good surgeon...no matter what you choose.

Well, I started at 404lbs and I am glad I had the Sleeve surgery!! the DS is not the only surgery for higher bmi's. My surgeon gave a wonderful seminar before my surgery, in which he said he bases the surgeries on quality of life. He said he would never recommend the DS for anyone unless they were around 700lbs and dying. The smelly gas is like having a colostomy. He told me I was a perfect candidate for the Sleeve, even at 404 pounds!! so don't think your options are limited.
Do the research and decide for yourself. Please do check out the over 50 BMI message board. There are more there that can relate to your story, and answer your questions.
Best wishes!

Your surgeon is a liar who couldn't do a DS if his life depended on it.

The seminar I went to spewed the same info.  I wish they would stop lying about it.  The guy I saw for my psych eval was even talking that junk about the DS.  I really wish I had gotten the DS.
