Weight Versus Clothing Size

I had WLS in August of 2010 and have now lost over 100 pounds. I am in a comfortable size 24 at 290 pounds now! In the past, I was wearing a size 24 at 225 or 230! I know sizes have changed dramatically due to "vanity sizing," but a 60 pound difference in sizing is boggling my mind! Has anyone else experienced this?

You know I am noticing the same thing.  I lost 130 lbs and weight 224 now.  I am wearing an 18/20.  Years ago I was under 200 to be at 18.  I just assumed it was because I am hitting the gym HARD.  So I am a leaner more muscular 224...then I was the first time I was 224.  I don't know if that makes a difference.

The general rule to compensate for vanity sizing is to add two full sizes.....an 8 is really fitting a 10, an 18 a 22.........and of course a lot depends on quality.   Higher priced items tend to be more carefully constructed with better fabrics etc. and I've always worn a smaller size in better clothes.  I have a size 10 dress of my mothers from the WWII era and I can barely get into it....and I"m a size 4/6 in current clothes.    European clothes tend to be truer to size and have changed less.    Susan

I've noticed how sizes can be so much different in one store verses another...I went to Peebles and bought a size 20 in jeans, and they fit perfect...Went to Fashion Bug and I couldn't even get into a size 20 or a 22...One thing Ive noticed in a lot of the stores is that they make their jeans so short waisted...Meaning the ones that the waist line is just below your belly button...If I were to wear those kind, I would look terrible with all my tummy hanging over...Some women can wear those, and they look great...I envy those with a flat belly...

I know what you mean.  I'm 225 right now and wear a size 16..but yet I went to Fashion Bug the other day and couldn't even pull a pair of 18's up over my hips.  I thought years ago, that I was under 200 to have fit into 16's or 18's.

I went to the store in a happy mood, wanting to shop for an outfit for a singles dance, only to get depressed because I couldn't even fit in a size 22...It automatically made me feel like I was the size 6X, weight of 440 pounds that I once was...I left the store so depressed...Shame on Fashion Bug!!! LOL

As far as fashion bug...it just makes it so you think you need to shop at their store for longer than you do...Since you "fit" into their larger sizes at this weight, by the time you size out of their plus size clothes you could have been fitting in "regular" sizes for quite a while at other stores.  So it make it so you shop at their store longer than you need to.
Does that make sense? I don't know if I explained it well or not?
By making women think they need to be in Plus size clothes at a lower weight, they will shop at just plus sized stores, thus ensuring that you will keep going to plus sizes stores more than you "need " to. Since there are fewer plus size store out there, most plus sized women will shop or at least look at those few stores for the variety that they don't think they actually have at all the other stores.

I posted a couple days ago... I was wearing J.Crew khakis in a size 2, and a belt I had worn 40 years ago in high school when I was a size 12.

Yup, size deflation lives!

It depends.  I'm 5'1" and currently weigh 153.2 I can fit into a petite medium- to a petite large from Boscov's and  a large  from Fashion Bug.. My mother gave me an expensive winter coat over Christmas.  It's slightly tight in the waist and hips(not bad but wearable)  and the best part of it is that it's a size 6 petite.  Go figure.  But I can tell you 1 thing.  It sure beats  a 4XL.
