Alcohol and WLS - Sad News from a friend

I have a friend that had RNY WLS about 7 years ago.  He stayed away from alcohol for about 2 years and gradually started drinking.  First it was beer, then he graduated up to straight on hard liquor.  It soon became nothing for him to drink gallons of alcohol during the course of the week.  He tried getting help but just could not over come this.  His marriage failed because of it. He could not keep a job and was diagnosed with liver cancer about 6 months.

He was hospitalized within the last two weeks due to liver failure and passed away this past Saturday at the age of 53.  He was laid to rest yesterday.  He has a 22 year old son and a 17 year old daughter who will graduate this May and go to college playing softball.

This man loved his family but he stated that the alcohol became like drinking water to him and he could not stay away from it.  That since having his WLS that is was easier to drink than ever before.

I am posting this to you all for awareness.

Sorry for your loss.  The end result of alcoholism is death or insanity.  We need to be careful.  Transfer addiction can be deadly for us.

Deborah,  I am so sorry you lost your friend.  Just last week I posted a study about the link between compulsive eating and addiction.

It is REAL.

OH Deborah that makes me soooooo very sad. I too have a 20 yr old and a 17yr old and it seems even the older they get the more they need me. I am sure they are really really feeling this and his exwife I am sure is too. I hope people really reach out to them during this time......I am so sorry

This was something that needed to be posted...I am just sorry it has happened. At my area support group last night..they had a therapist in who talked about transfer addictions and the #1 transfer addiction was alcohol.  They said we tend to get drunk really fast -then sober up fast - which leads to more drinking...this really makes you think. Thanks for sharing. I pray his family is ok.
