Went to the ER this AM via surgeons orders because I had a moderate amount of blood after a bowel movement(couldn't see thru the water anymore). At the hospital, i explained i have not drank much at all, haven't eaten etc. They did not bother to start an IV. The surgeon told me they would preform a colonoscopy once i got there. HOWEVER the ER staff admitted to not knowing much about Gastric Bypass patients and said since my color, and vitals were good i would not need one. They did a rectal exam and felt 1 hemrrhoid that they couldn't tell me if it was popped or not. They couldnt tell me anything. No diagnosis They basically asked why i didnt go back to the hospital where i had the surgery(BECAUSE MY SURGEON TOLD ME TO COME HERE). Whatever. They told me to go see my surgeon in the AM....worthless visit. now im behind on proteins and fluid and vitamins. I suppose its normal to bleed to the point of needing to put on a panti liner(TMI SRY) out of ur butt these days!!!! Especially when your 1 month out from intestinal re-routing.

END RANT. THANK YOU FOR READING

OMG that is so NOT normal to bleed that way honey! Did they at least draw up your bloodwork to make sure your blood count isn't too low?  Bleeding is serious business.  I was admitted for a GI bleed, spent 5 days in the hospital and took 6 units of blood just to get me on the low side of normal.  PLEASE tell me they did labs today...at a minimum.

Sorry you are dealing with this.  It's scary.

Hi Lisa, they did do blood work. The only thing abnormal was my sugars were low. They did say if it happens again to go back and then i'll need blood and a scope...so im just waiting till the next bowel movement to see what happens i guess. did they say what caused your GI bleed?

Okay good I am so glad...that would be malpractice if they didn't!  Glad to hear there were no major red flags with your bloodwork.  I am curious to see what happens - please keep us posted.  Mine was a bleeding ulcer which was diagnosed through a scope and cauderized to fix.  The difference was that I had black tarry stools and was vomiting blood that looked like coffee grounds, which they told me is generally an upper GI issue, whereas bright red blood usually indicates a lower GI, colon,  or hemhorroid issue (or something of the like).  Well I hope you figure this out and they can fix it right away.  I'll sleep better tonight knowing you do not have a low blood count which indicates internal bleeding (for me, it led to passing out in the bathroom and cracking my browbone open!).  Glad you can at least cross that off your list.  Be sure to stay in tune with your body (dizzy when you stand, etc.) and address it immediately if you do.  Take care, okay?

When I was a kid my mother had bleeding hemorroids and when she got up the toilet would be filled with blood like someone had died, it was scary, I remember how many pair of pants she ruined.  So truly bleeding hemorroids could be the source of really red blood, typically if its coming from inside of you the blood is darker and not bright red.  I only go to the hospital associated with my surgeon even though I don't see him, he still orders whats needed when I am there.

To reassure you - as Lisa indicated with her own experience....an upper GI bleed associated with your surgery would result in a black tarry stool.....not bright red blood in the toilet. Your blood work would also indicate if you had had a dangerous bleed (meaning you needed to be transfused etc.) I do think you would have benefitted from fluids......so that doesn't make sense to me - but don't think it was a wasted visit. ERs are for an emergency. You went because unexplained bleeding can be emergent......but since they found an active hemorrhoid - that can quite easily explain it. I've had them. They can bleed in a frightening way - especially is you are under hydrated and constipated to the point that you are straining. Followup with your surgeon and get your hydration back quickly...push fluids. Scary experience.....hope you're feeling better. Susan

RNY on 04/10/12 with
While pregnant I used the bathroom one morning both the toile****er and my panties were stained with a lot of bright red blood. I thought I was having a miscarriage and went to the ER where they found a hemorrhoid! I was clueless I had one because there was no pain at all. It could be that it's the same for you. After my RNY I pooped dark red/brown almost black blood, that was from the surgery. It looked totally different than the hemorrhoid bright red blood. I wish you good luck.

I'm glad that you had enough concern to go to the hospital.. I had a GI Bleed as well it started on a Friday and I didnt' go to hospital till Sunday.. I had all of the symptoms the black tarry stool and the vomiting of blood. I kept trying to tell myself that I would be ok.. But when I got up that sunday morning to go to the bathroom i was so dizzy barely made it there without the help of my husband.. On my way back from bathroom knew something was wrong called for my husband to call an ambulance.. While at the hospital I just finished with a CT scan which showed nothing.. Then I had to go to bathroom.. wasn't even out of the bed by about 45 seconds in a wheelchair my husband was pushing then I passed out! He said I started to seize then all he seen was all of this blood.. I dont remember anything about it but I do remember hovering over my body that is how I knew that I was close to death... I could see everything the doctor and nurse was doing.. Could tell my husband where he was standing at in the room.. he couldn't beleive that he said I was out cold and was pale to almost a ash color.. Spent 10 days and 5 units of blood to get better.. Please to anyone out there never ignore signs of blood in your stools it could be sometihng really serious.. I had  GI bleed twice and had to have surgeyt to cauterize the bleed...
