Need a little advice, I'm a little confused on my liquid diet.  In the hospital all they gave me was a bite of jello and a sip of apple juice and (my life saver) Italian Ice. My take home instructions say to continue clear liquids for 2 weeks until I see the surgeon.  now I thought I was supposed to drink protein shakes as well or does that begin after  a couple of weeks. 4 days post op and I am surviving on just my clear liquids and supplements and meds which don't leave room for much else. So my question is am I ok as is or do I need protein shakes now or do I wait I don't know????????

On day four after surgery I was to start one protien shake a day in addition to all the other clear liquids until I see the doctor.  I am also permitted decaf coffee.  I'd call your surgeon to make sure that he wants you to drink the shakes.

Just to show you how differently surgeons discharge their wls patients: I went home on pureed!

Call the office and ask for advice.

Good luck!

You need to clarify this with your surgeon. But in general you are just fine with what you're taking in right now. You will not become protein deficient in two weeks. Also, this time is NOT NOT NOT about losing weight. It's about healing from major surgery. You need to focus on doing the right things to heal your gut, NOT to think about WLS diet.

They gave me protein shakes right in the hospital. They are part of my liquid diet.

It's always sad to see people go home with little direction these days. WLS is no longer 'new'. That being said, DO WHAT YOU WERE TOLD...nothing but clear liquids. That means if you can't read newsprint thru it at room temp, DON'T USE IT. Tomorrow, you owe it to yourself and family to call your 'surgical WLS team' at the office and clarify what your post-op diet is.
I wish you the best on your journey.

I had to be on clear liquids for one week after surgery. That meant no protein shakes. But like other people said all Dr.s are different.

This is my second day post-op, and my instructions are completely different than yours. But I agree with everyone else -- follow your doctor's instructions. Those are the things he's used to and knows how to deal with. And also call tomorrow and clarify.  Good luck. Hope all is going well for you.
